What are the best attractions in Galveston?

We will be cruising out of Galveston in January and wonder what attractions would be fun to see while we are in that port city? Any suggestions?

    sailyn and corina27:

We'll be sailing out of Galveston in February. Let me know if you see someplace where we can pick up a couple bottles of wine near the pier please.

My favorite places to go to in Galveston are the Strand and Moody Gardens. I know that there were a few buildings on the Strand that caught fire during Rita, but I think that for the most part, things are back to normal.

Take a look at this thread for starters:

and if you need more info, just ask! There are things for all different interests there, but we can always add more!

askdad - there is a Wal-Mart at 65th and Seawall, but I don't know if they carry wine (the one near me does). If you are driving, I recommend stopping at the FM 518 exit, League City, and go to the Spec's Liquor Store in the Kroger Shopping Center there. (southeast corner) There is a Specs downtown which has a HUGE selection, but this one is easier to get to when driving to Galveston. It's open M-Sat, 10-9.

    More info for askdad

I looked for the closest Spec's to the port, since their selection AND prices are excellent. HOWEVER, if you are going to Galveston by cab, you may not want to stop on the way. I found several Liquor stores on Galveston Island; this one is the closest to the terminal:

    Frankie's Liquor Store
    Address: 101 21st St, Galveston, TX 77550 Phone:(409) 765-6520

I have no idea what their prices are like. In fact, you should expect to pay more, because it is on the island. But it is a short distance to the Pier.

    We enjoyed Moody Gardens

Niece and nephew loved it as well.
Takes at least a day to see it all.
