Here's a way to help the folks in the Gaoveston area, who are really, really struggling to get their lives back together after Hurricane Ike hit them so very hard.

We need your help to provide relief supplies to people in the Houston/Galveston, TX, area in the aftermath of Hurricane Ike. As we speak, Portlight Strategies, Inc., has several trucks filled with supplies heading there. Our intent is to seek out the more rural and isolated areas (which might fall under the radar screen of the institutional relief organizations) and offer these folks what assistance we can. This model worked well for us following Katrina and we are replicating it now.
Specifically, we will deliver water, personal hygiene supplies, and non-perishable, non-cook able foodstuff. We are coordinating our work with several Houston area agencies so as to have the greatest direct impact. We will also connect with Catholic churches and charities in the area in hopes of supplementing their work
A quote from Paul Timmons, who has helped coordinate this effort:
My wife just called...they will NOT be staying in Bridge City. They unloaded half the truck there, and the folks from Winnie TX (on the Bolivar Peninsula) called by radio and begged them to bring the rest of the supplies there. So, they are on the road to Winnie, where they will stay at the fire house in the dark. She and SJ are in tears...my wife quoted one of the Bridge City officials: "Thank God for y'all.
Some people try to turn back their odometers. Not me! I want people to know why I look this way. I've traveled a long way, and some of the roads weren't paved.
Most people walk into and out of your life . . . but FRIENDS leave footprints in your heart

GALVESTON, Texas (AP) — Ten days after Hurricane Ike, this devastated beach town reopened to residents Wednesday with stern warnings about what still lurks on the island — rotting cattle carcasses, snakes and swarms of mosquitoes — and what isn't there: drinking water, reliable electricity, medical care or sewer service.
After spending hours in traffic that backed up for 10 miles, some residents found their homes in ruins.
www.portlight.org is sending truckloads to Bridge City and Winnie. Each time they raise enough for another truckload, the truck goes on its way.
The town of Bridge City was inundated with a massive storm surge even though it was far displaced from Ike's landfall point. This speaks to just how massive Ike was. The people of Bridge City, Winnie, and other small towns in Ike's path will need help for a long time to come. Portlight Strategies, Inc.
