I am an airport lover so would just hang out there. After you get your luggage you can get a luggage cart. There are a few restaurants there but nothing like Miami. You could have something to eat, grab a coffe to go and go outside and watch the planes with the cart. Then grab a cab to the pier around 11 am. There are lots of cement benches outside the terminals so you can sightsee & people watch
Some people try to turn back their odometers. Not me! I want people to know why I look this way. I've traveled a long way, and some of the roads weren't paved.

When we lived up north we had to fly to cruise. So I never booked a return flight till 5 pm. Hung around all day, it was awesome. You see some strange things on people coming off the planes.

I know you could grab a cab & go to a hotel and for a fee they will store your bags, then eat & walk, It would just be an extra expense and hanging out is free Then you can hit the dining room or buffet when you board and pig out

Jim, I agree. Sort of. The decent restaurants are beyond the security points. So if you go to baggage claim and get your luggage, you are stuck on the outside of the airport. I suppose it depends on which terminal you are in too. We were in Southwest last month on the way back, and had to go through security to eat. We did come back out through the security line to get some fresh air for a while. But we only had our carryons.

I bet Nancy might have an Idea. Los Olas is there and she goes there everytime she sails out of Lauderdale

Jim, actually I have no idea on which hotel to use. You will still be limited on time. If you get there at 6, you should have your luggage in hand by 7. Then a cab ride to a hotel which should take 1/2 hour or less. Then find something to eat. So by the time you are done eating it would be about 9'ish. I guess it all depends on what time you want to get to the pier, yes? If you don't want to be there til 2 or so, then I would say go for it.
