    normandy and her beaches

this is a thread started in response to a couple of questions about this part of france.

utah and omaha beaches are at the western end of the five landing beaches. juno beach is the central one, gold and sword are the two eastern ones.

the u.s. airborne mueum is situated in ste mere eglise (yes they do have a mock up of the guy hung up on the church steeple). it's worth a visit.
the texas rangers museum is at a place called grandcamp-maisy, by the main quay towards the hotel atlantique.
if you go to the pointe du hoc, you can still see and walk in the original craters from the naval bombardment, you cannot however stand on the point where reagan, mitterand and our one stood due to the erosion of the cliffs. it's about five miles from the town where the museum is located.

the main american cemetary located at colleville sur mer is on the cliffs directly overlooking omaha beach. it's beautifully kept. if you go there, stay for "last-post" ; i'll guaranteeyou'll come awaywith a lump in your throat.

any specific information anyone wants i'll be happy to supply

    smitty.
