This morning we arose to find ourselves at anchor in the harbor of the small principality of Monaco. The harbor itself is beautiful, with huge yachts and oppulent sailboats lining the piers. A red orange sun greeted us as we prepared to tender ashore to see Nice and Eze, both in neighboring France here on the Meditterean Coast.
We decided to take the trip to Nice and Eze that was offered by HAL. It was a Saturday morning and very quiet still as we left Monaco. We started the morning with a picturesque and traffic-less trip up the Lower Corniche and were treated to views of Tina Turners' home and Bill Gates' new Castle here on the coast of dreams.
Our first stop was to the open air market in center of old Nice. It was still early as we arrived, and watched as a world of flowers, the freshest vegetables and mushrooms begun to come to life. There were spices, curries and paprika’s, the colors of an autumn sunset as well as fragrant French soaps made locally in a dizzying amount of fragrances. I finally chose a potent Lavender bar as well as more subtle basilica (basil) and Limon Vert (lime) for 10 Euros.
We then headed to the little mountain top town of Eze. It is charming and quaint and has a hotel there that is $2000 per night for your little piece of mountaintop heaven. There is a good amount of climbing to get to the top of the hillside town, so I recommend you not have any walking difficulty if you hope to get to the top of the Village. They tell me the view of the Med coast was well worth the climb!
The first 2 pics are at the Market in Nice, the third a picture of the almost surreal beauty of the little town of Eze.
We were there several years ago when I didn't have knee problems and we were able to walk to the top and visit Eze. It was interesting to see all the tiny houses, shops and the hotel. The entire path is filled with all types of shops -- wish we had been given ample time to stop in a few and buy some souveniors. The view from the top was fantastic!!

Localady...you should write for a travel magazine. We will be in Villefranche in October and are planning a tour to Nice and Cannes....The way you decsribe Nice we may just do the Nice tour instead. I am even more excited after reading your post!!

It is a most outstanding part of France we opted for a private all day tour.. and went everywhere....well almost everywhere... I figured what the heck this is a birthday celebration too! LOL
eze is awesome. there is a michelin ranked restaurant and hotel in the village of eze called chevre d'or that is supposed to be amazing.
i just moved from the south of france and i must that eze is one village not to miss. another nearby town to see that tops Eze, is called St. Paul De Vence. the best restaurant i have ever been to was in this town and it is called La Colombe d'or. (the golden dove) picasso used to live at this establishment where he and matisse, calder, braque and others traded their now priceless art for food and a place to stay. the art is still on display at the restaurant. st paul de vence is closer to Nice, than Eze.
a little closer to eze is a picturesque town known for luxury and the richest people in the world. it's called beaulieu sur mer. frank sinatra used to hang out at the grand hotel du cap ferrat. i recommend coming here for a drink or to check out the scenery. the 1968 cognac is fabulous.
