Helsinki, Finland

Ok, I need advice. I've heard from several people that the Rock Church is amazing. Is this absolutely a must? It seems that every tour goes here. Also what about Porvoo? Have you been there? Is it worth a trip out there? What did you do in Helsinki? Did you like it? What is there to buy there?

Alisa:

When AllieMan and I get back next month, we'll let you know! We're taking a tour of Helsinki that will include the Rock Church, Olympic Stadium, Sibelius park and let's us stick around in town on our own afterward! I'll take plenty of pix!

Alisa: yes, do see the Rock Church-it is pretty amazing! We enjoyed our visit to Helsinki. We opted for a harbor cruise first, which was interesting and relaxing. There was an open market at the downtown port with great foods, etc. Close by there is an old market hall with more stores and restaurants. We took the city tour which included the Rock Church, and the Sibelius Park.

I'll 2nd this!!! The Rock Church is incredible!! We also went to the open market and then went to a Russian Cathedral and there's a 2nd Cathedral that we didn't get a chance to see inside due to a special event....We hoofed it all around without buses or transportation with the exception of the ship's shuttle to the city, which is about a 15-20 minute drive.

We just got back from our Baltic cruise. In Helsinki we did a ship tour, saw the huge Lutheran cathedral with all the steps to climb. Was lovely inside and not so gaudy as the Catholic ones I have seen. A huge 5000 pipe organ that they played while we were there! The big square at the base was empty except for a statue. When my friend was there she said it was full of vendors. There were streets of shops across from the cathedral where we picked up some souvineers. I got a beautiful foot tall Santa in raindeer fur coat, he had a darling face which I fell for. Wasn't too expensive either.
We drove through the city and saw the rock church, amazing, the Sibelius monument, Olympic, and many other sights along the way. I thought the architecture was rather bland, I felt it a bit depressing like I thought the Soviet countries might look like. This was probably my least favorite of the Baltics, but I still enjoyed it.

Tour info:

We took Helsinki Dity Highlights tour, It was a Princess tour. About 3 hours, a guided drive that visited Senate Square where St Nicholas Cathedral is. We had time here to visit the cathedral on our own, be prepared to climb a lot of steps, and also do some shopping on the narrow streets that go off the square. Also visited Temppeliaukio Rock Church, carved from solid bedrock. We then visited the Sibelius Monument, neat to see. It also says we visited the "colorful market square" but I'm drawing a blank on that one, sorry. Price range $46-$56, I think we paid the higher price.
WE tried to pick tours that weren't all day as we knew we would spend all day both days in St Petersburg.
