Question about cruising with an infant...

We are planning on cruising Royal Caribbean Explorer of the Seas from NJ to Bermuda on June 5th and my son will turn one year old on June 12th. He will still be able to sleep in a pack-n-play, so my question is: can I book a double room and just have the pack-n-play brought in for him? I know I still pay for the 3 people, but do I need to book a room that sleeps 3 ?

That's a good question, Denise. My first thought would be yes, you can do that. But we need someone more expert than me to get a for sure answer.

Hopefully, one of our travel agent members will be along tonight to give you the info that you need.

    Stay tuned!

    HI Denise.

I am no travel agent, but I do spend a lot of time writing about the various practices of the various cruise lines.

I will take a stab at a portion of your question, with the reassurance that an experienced travel agent familiar with Royal Caribbean shall be along shortly to give some sage advice.

But, Royal Caribbean does offer complimentary, in-room Pack n Play's. Keep in mind they no longer offer cribs. As a parent of a young child myself, I recognize there is a crucial difference. But you mentioned your little one is comfortable sleeping in a Pack n Play.. excellent!

For some hints and tips about cruising with young children (Cruising With Kids: Royal Caribbean)aboard Royal Caribbean ships: http://www.cruiselinefans.com/family...caribbean.html (Cruising With Kids: Royal Caribbean)

What exactly is your concern about booking a second room? Are you concerned that the Pack N Play won't fit? Feel free to elaborate on your concerns.

What type of cabin have you booked or are you planning on booking for the cruise?

It's an excellent itinerary aboard a lovely ship....with family - all important.

    Enjoy!

I'm not a travel agent either but I am going to say you will have to get a triple cabin. If I am not mistaken it is coast guard rules for a berth for the amount of passengers booked, even if you don't use one. If there is an issue and an evacuation is issued a search of all cabins is done. In a double they would assume 2 passengers. Your steward would know there were 3, but the steward may not be the one searching. In a triple, the third bunk would come out of the wall or ceiling, but if not used it can stay up there, and not turned down at night. You can request that to your cabin steward. I could be wrong but that is what I would expect.
Some people try to turn back their odometers. Not me! I want people to know why I look this way. I've traveled a long way, and some of the roads weren't paved.

It shouldn't be a problem booking a double cabin and adding a pack n Play. The occupancy restrictions apply to the total passenger load, not the individual cabin. If the ship is booked heavily with triples and quads, sometimes the ship will reach maximum capacity with some cabins still empty. This can affest a passenger that has a single booked but a friend decides that they can, after all, cruise. They may be denied adding the second person in the cabin. This doesn't usually happen but it can.

Not familiar with Royal Caribbean, but Carnival provided a pack n' play when our girl was 23 months on her first cruise. We either had an inside or an oceanview on that cruise (the reverse on our next cruise). You do have to book the child as a third passenger no matter what. Hopefully RC has a third passenger rate (we usually got that on Carnival), but paid full tips for our girl. We brought our own sheets for the p'n'p.

As far as I know, yes. You should check with NCL directly to confirm.
