More Cruise Math

Cruisinmama, another math related idea when dining ashore, get the kids to figure out the tip.
  • Calculate 10% -- easy moving decimals
  • Half this amount rounding if necessary
  • Add the two together to get a 15% tip
FIguring out sales' taxes brings a shudder or reality to spending too, especially when they're carefully budgeting their own money.

It was interesting watching our three budget on trips. The youngest would blow his bundle at the first opportunity while the other two would hoard and debate and then realize they'd be going home emptyhanded if they didn't take the plunge.

Travel and university away from home helped ground them financially early on.

Thanks! I bet it wouldn't amaze you how many adults have NO idea how to do that.

I think I will teach the kids to do that in restaurants. Great idea!

The girl, who's in sixth grade, had a recent project involving percentages. They had to make a catalog for a store that involved including prices at 10%, 50% and 75% off regular prices and make up a receipt for a customer and figure out the sales tax. Fortunately I checked out her math before she did her final version and found a couple of the answers wrong, and explained to her how to check 50% off at a glance. She ended up getting a perfect score, plus an extra credit point for typing the text on the computer.

Hopefully she'll remember my "tip" before any tests (I'm guessing percentages will be on the state tests next month).

In PA, they were on the state tests for 3rd grade. That and fractions. They seem to be moving them right along these days.

what a great idea.. I am going to be homeschooling my daughter who is just 2-1/2 now....but using real life and vacations to enhance their learning is always easier then reading books about it.

They seem to teach the same concepts each year, but they make it more difficult each time.
