    Roll away beds

    Hi
We are booked for a 5 day cruise over Easter on Fantasy. It will be myself, my husband and two daughters (ages 12 and 13). When I looked at the cabin number that is on our confirmation from the travel agent it is a room with one upper berth according to the deck plans that I found on line. So I called and was told that they would bring a roll away bed into our cabin.

Has anyone done this? Is there room to get to the bathroom or would we have to climb over someone else as they are sleeping? Do they take it away during the day or is it there for the duration of the cruise?

I have only sailed once before on a RCL and the cabin was very very tiny. I can't imagine where a roll away would even fit.

We don't have a guaranteed room, but an actual cabin number so I don't think it will be changed, but any advice would be greatly appreciated. I originally posted this on the Carnival forum page, but didn't get any responses. So I figured that families that travel with kids might have more experience with this.

I am surprised that your TA let you book a cabin for 4 in a cabin for three, I would call your tA back and see if you can change it!!

They can bring the toll away in....but it isn't easy to get to the bathroom, lol, like you stated.

I personally would book a room that is designated for four people, with 2 pull downs. The last Carnival ship I was on was the Fantasy...had a 6D I believe as a triple...it was quite small...my daughter was in the pull down bed to sleep. I honestly don't know where the roll away would go in the cabin that I had...

    Good luck...

Got to agree with Sue on this one. See if you can get a cabin designed for 4.

    thanks

Thanks for your input. I called Carnival and they told me that our room is designated for up to four people because they consider the roll away bed a viable option. They also told me that the only way they would change the room is if an error had been made and we needed to fit 5 people in our cabin. Then they would need to put us in a room with 2 wall bunks and a roll away besides.

The lady I talked to was very nice and told me that they would come in and fold up the roll away each day and unfold it each night. She said the cabins were designed for a roll away to fit in a certain spot and I would not have to climb over one of my kids to use the bathroom during the night.

So...... I am still a bit apprehensive, but have decided life is too short to worry about it. I will let you all know how it works out after the cruise. (March 22-27)

    Thanks again,

Of course, you can always change it by adding an extra kid, then a month later, drop the extra person.

Please let us know how this works out.

We have just one child so we've just had the bunk beds.

We are back and the rollaway worked out fine. It wasn't really a roll away bed like I had pictured. It was a narrow bed that was placed on the floor under the pull down bed that was attached to the wall. It was like having bunk beds on that side of the room. I slept on the window side of the big bed (twins that had been pushed together) and had to crawl over my husband to get to the bathroom at night, but that was fine. There was no walking area in the room and very little space for suitcases to be kept out. We made good use of the drawers and shelves in the closet. I guess I am not used to having all four of us in such close quarters. I can't imagine another pull down would have been any better. The girls said that the bed on the floor was comfortable and they had no complaints.

The pull down and the bed on the floor were left open for the whole cruise. It worked out well because then our girls had a place to put their things. If we wanted to sit and relax we sat on the big bed. We didn't spend much time in the room.

All in all, if someone else is considering this, I would say it was okay. The only way to get more room is to book 2 cabins and I am not sure that would be able to afford that. This arrangement did not detract from our wonderful cruise experience. We had a great time.
