I have spoken with him about taking him on a cruise next year, if I can get the teacher to agree and the school district, since he will be going into HS. He'll be in the international magnet program and maybe I can get by the missed days, if he does a report.

I have that problem with my girl. When her hay fever acts up, she might as well be at home. Fortunately, she's had one or two teachers that realize this and have told me that I can keep her home for a couple of more days and they'll give me the homework to pick up so she can keep up.
So I don't dare take her out for non-illness reasons as she doesn't have the days to spare.
One reason many school districts push for 95 per cent or higher attendance is really all about money. In California, each day each child is in school, the district gets money from the state.
