We use them for our family and if others are with us and have them we put our whole group on the same frequency.
I think if you use them correctly you can avoid bothering others on the ship.
Do you use them?

I've never seen anybody using them on a cruise, but I have heard some people do. I guess if you were with kids and on a really big ship it would be a good way to keep in touch.
From the other perspective, however, it would definitely take away from the romantic atmosphere and ambiance if I was standing on deck with my sweetie, arm in arm, watching the waves and sipping champagne...if we suddenly heard a parent next to us talking loudly into their walkie-talkie: "*static* Johnnie...I said NOW! GET YOUR BUTT OUT OF THE POOL NOW and meet us on deck SIX...No DECK SIX! SIX! No I don't CARE what your sister said...! *static*"

Save a Lizard, ride a Horse.
We have them and even thought about bringing them with us on the last cruise....could've come in handy one or two times, but for the most part, I didn't want to be bothered with all the chargers and stuff....
We bought some for our last cruise thinking they would be a way of keeping track of the kids, but then when we read on another board how noisy and bothersome they can be to fellow passengers, we decided to leave them at home.
Most of the time we had no trouble keeping up with the kids, except when DS would sign himself out and then get distracted on the way back to the cabin. We'll have to be more strict about him not signinghimself out next time. To tell the truth I really had more trouble tracking down DH, He too seemed to forget meeting times and places.
Anyway, we just thought it better not to annoy our fellow passengers so we left them at home.

One of the 11-yr-olds in the kids program used them on the last cruise. She would call her mom as she's leaving and keep talking to her back to the cabin (was about 10 cabins down from ours, we realized when I was picking up our girl at the same time and we ended up in the elevator at the same time).
As our girl was always in the fun zone (on a "not to sign out self" basis) or with us, two-ways were not necessary.
I'm just so glad that currently cell phones are unusable on Princess. It drives me crazy watching people unattentively cross parking lots, walk around stores, etc. as they gab on the phone.

Our kids use them .... they have the rule to let us know if they are leaving the kids room etc. We always use the vibrate mode, so the annoying alert sound isn't heard!
They also have earpieces so the conversation isn't heard by everyone around. Esp. if in a show!
I did not think of this. But it would be a very good idea. Then you can keep track of family members. Espeically if you have teens who like to be all over, I know they would not be needed on land as I keep a very close eye on kids onland.

You can rent them for a small fee (how small) on Princess.
