We've used them several times. Best to get the 5 or 10 mile radius kind - anything less doesn't work on a ship very well. Not too pricey - about $50-$80 for a pair.

They're also great for using in port - if they're old enough, the kids can go their way and you can go yours. Beats paying the high price of roaming charges in some of the foreign ports.

But you're right, as with most things, some people can 'overdo' being a nuisance.

I've heard it is a great thing to have, I was considering bringing along a pair but I don't know, it seems like a lot to lug around...

They're not that big, so they don't take up too much space. But it really depends on what you need them for - if you have kids (or maybe even a husband) that like to explore and lose track of time, it might be worth it. There are times I wish I could implant a GPS system in my wife when we're at the mall! lol She can cover more ground in less time than anyone I've ever met!

But there are times in port that they have been very helpful, especially if you like to go different ways or do different things. Again, get the more powerful units. And also get rechargeable batteries, makes it much easier and cheaper, or get the rechargeable units.

Hi Pete, I thought I'd take a set with me on my next cruise. It's just my two little grandson's and me going. I want them to be able to call me if they want to leave the kidzone. I'm not going to let the older one (10) sign himself out. We have the rechargeble kind. I don't want to disturb anyone but I want to be in communication with them, I might be sitting in front of a slot machine

We used them on our recent cruise and they were great. The kids could be independent and still link to us if needed. Definitely use the headset/mic, a lot of the hands-free sets that come with cell phones can be used with the walkie talkies. You can also pick up a good set on e-bay fairly cheap.
