Some Exhibitions in Rome 2008

Sebastiano del Piombo: Venezia 1485 - 1547
Palazzo Venezia
Sebastiano’s extraordinary life is the subject of a retrospective exhibition that follows his entire stylistic evolution as a contemporary of Leonardo, Michelangelo, Raphael, Giorgione and Titian. The first and only monographic exhibition ever organised about the Veniceborn painter takes place in Rome, where Sebastiano was at the height of his career as a leading figure in an age of complex historical, social, religious transformations: from the Counter Reformation to the Sack of Rome to the succession of seven Popes over a few decades.
from 07/02/2008 to 18/05/2008

Ottocento
Scuderie del Quirinale
This is the very first time that an exhibition has been devoted purely to 19th century painting in Italy. Despite being the century in which Italy won its freedom and its national independence, in other words the era of the Risorgimento or national reawakening, the 19th century has always seemed to coincide with Italy's loss of its former leading role, after the country's culture and civilisation had dominated the world for centuries. While opera, with Rossini, Donizetti, Bellini, Verdi and Puccini, was universally appreciated (and has remained so), only the sculptor Canova in the early part of the century and the painters Boldini and Segantini in the latter part have enjoyed anything like genuine international recognition.

The inner circle. Photos and installations by Anastasia Khoroshilova - FREE ENTRANCE
Sala Santa Rita, Via Montanara (adiacente piazza Campitelli)
The young Moscow-born photographer Anastasia Khoroshilova is considered a post-diaspora artist by the critics given that she was educated in Berlin and then returned to her country of origin. After exhibiting all over the world (and garnering plaudits from an international public) she is now being granted her first Roman solo exhibition. The large-format black-and-white photos portray young students who frequent Moscow's Hebrew School the metaphorical inner circle. The circular layout of the exhibition mirrors this idea. The images also feature mirrors on their backs... the result is the visual super-imposition of the subjects photographed, as well as the super-imposition of the visitors to the show.

China today. Identity and transformation
Palazzo delle Esposizioni
From the mid-1990's forward, China entered into an era of unprecedented and radical social transformation, unique in terms of scale and nature within the entire realm of Chinese history. It has become what is called a "double-sex" society (referring to the reality of the co-existence of both socialism and capitalism). This unique social system sets China apart from all other nations of our world, remaining as valid proof of the super-reform that contemporary China has rapidy thrown itself into, touching every strata and as pect of its society while altering the composition of its social landscape.

The Form of Speed
Palazzo delle Esposizioni
This exhibition on the theme of speed, studied and analyzed through the manifold transformations of its various forms, examines the major changes that marked the twentieth century in Italy, where the concept of velocity inspired not only builders of motor vehicles but also painters, sculptors, designers, film directors and architects. The aim is to recount the phenomenon by exploring its most unique manifestations. Works of art, videos, cinema, photography and graphics are combined to present a complete picture of speed-inspired forms. Conceived by the architects Eugenio Martera and Patrizia Pietrogrande, the exhibition benefits from the collaboration of experts in various fields: Giovanni Lista for the visual arts; Alberto Barbera for the cinema; Marco Montemaggi for motor vehicles; Sofia Gnoli for fashion; Giuseppe Furlanis for design. The show will be held in the rooms on LEVEL 1 of Palazzo delle Esposizioni and follows a chronological itinerary composed of seven rooms, each devoted to a different aspect of speed.
