Another note. In GB and Europe, the smallest bill is the 5 pound or Euro. Anything smaller than that is coins (1 and 2 dollar equivalents)

Ziggy, in our country, we do not pay wait staff that much, so tipping becomes important. This is true for other service jobs.

In the EU, many jobs that are low paying here are not there, and have more benefits. For instance, cab drivers here tend to be independent, but in EU countries tend to be covered by health insurance. All of these drive different customs and different tipping practices.

When I was taking Frendh in high school, they told us that it was customary to tip ushers in the movie theater! I wonder if that is still true.

What is really interesting is tipping in Vegas. You tip, then you get the service- especially in shows and the like.

I just wonder what the Spanish, Greek or Italian waiter who works on a contract without health benefits, 6 days a week, 12-14 hours a day for as little as Euro 800,- would say about weather guests should tip or not!!!
Tipping 10 prosent is a very good rule to live by. I usually give that in tip to waitstaff. Thought the norm has become "just to tip what the service was worth"

It sounds like Spanish, Greek and Italian waiters have conditions similar to those of the US waiters. We tip them 15% on average.

Is that 800 Euro per week? That would work out to about $65,000 year in the US which isn't a bad salary.
