We did a tour that gave us lots of time in Old Tallin, then we got on a bus and toured around Estonia as our tourguide told us the history of the country and explained what we were looking at as we drove. We stopped at an outdoor music theater that they're very proud of, where the townspeople go for music and theater. And we saw a lot of beautiful forests and countryside as well as some fairly modern looking urban areas. It was pretty much an all day outing. If you got to choose just one thing to do because of limited time, I would say see Old Estonia...although the countryside was interesting and Estnia on the whole is not like any other place I've seen. Part of what's interesting is that it's an old Soviet splinter country, and they have this fierce independent spirit. I really enjoyed talking to the Estonian people for that reason.

I, like Julie, just love old Tallin!! It is really nice to take a guided tour then spend some time wandering the streets and shopping. Lots of beautiful wool sweaters (unfortunately, not something you need often in California! )
In 2000 the prices in Tallinn were a steal...but now it's a very popular shopping spot for the Finnish etc, and the prices have risen a bit. Still more reasonable than anywhere else in the Baltic though!

I was just getting ready to send the link. before I went to Tailinn a couple of years ago, I looked at all the pictures and actually saw a bunch of those places on my walking tour around the old city.
The people in the stores were lovely. Some of the best prices were in the stalls away from the entry that led you to the ship. I brought back scarves and mittens and sweaters galore == really nice and warm here in Oklahoma in the winter. Prices were very reasonable in 2004.
Also got several of the dolls of various sizes for the little girls in my family.
I don't think you will ever forget Tailinn. I won't.
