Thank you. For several reasons, I would probably prefer to work with Ronald who you know and recommend. The ship's excursion is not a bad looking one so if I can't find something that is clearly better, I would probably do that.
So far I have 6 (Garry & me, Cheryl & Ed and Esther & Tommy). That's enough for me to contact Ronald and see what he has to offer. I like the open trucks Celebrity uses but would like to see if he has anything similar (or at least open). One thing we really liked on our Curacao excursion was that we drove ourselves in the caravan. Added a little danger to the fun.
Pat & I went to lunch last week and after much discussion, we've decided to ship our big suitcases to the hotel in Rome. It's a pretty big expense but this way, if it should be necessary, I can carry/roll her luggage and mine. She has walking problems occasionally so we need to be prepared! Just like a good Scout. Certainly will make it easier on the train. Depending on what liquids she has to bring, we might even be able to carry our 22" suitcases onboard our flight. That would be way cool.
Anyway, Susan, thanks for the idea and the links.

I was just about to email you another one! First Luggage (First Luggage is the world’s leading international door to door luggage collection and delivery service. - Home) is the one I am working with today. They may be able to deliver the bags directly to the cruise ship from our London hotel for a lot less than it will cost to ship them from the states. It could mean as much as $200 savings to check them in LAX, pick them up at Heathrow and then let First Luggage courier them from our London hotel to our Rome hotel or to the Equinox. (Although I would rather ship them directly from home). I am waiting to hear back from them and with the time difference I should have a response tomorrow.
Since we will be climbing onto and off of trains for a week before the cruise, getting rid of half of our luggage was an essential, not a luxury. It is now only a question of how much it will cost and where it will be picked up and delivered.

Health nuts are going to feel stupid someday, lying in hospitals, dying of nothing.
Well we finally did it....made plane reservations. I guess this means that we're really going. We wanted to take the UA flight on Nov 1 from Dulles to Rome, but they don't have any seats for miles....not that they're out of them...just aren't selling them. OK....not the worst thing...so we are flying Swiss Air from Chicago to Zurich and then on to Rome. They have seats available for our UA miles and they are "saver" miles. So we are flying 1st class for 1/2 of what we thought it would cost us in miles. Doing a RT since we are planning on Connie TA next April and will be flying back from Frankfurt.
Now....we arrive in Rome about 3 pm on Nov 2. Anyone else going into Rome arriving about then?

Unless something has changed recently (and that would be a GOOD thing), United has never accepted miles for 1 way tickets or open jaw tickets of the sort that would work for a trans-Atlantic itinerary (open segment longer than the non-open segments). It bites. They fuss about getting all of the miles off the books, and then make it inconvenient to "help" them do it!
Anyway, if you were prepared to burn round trip miles to do it, but United wasn't offering anything, don't forget that USAir is another way to burn those Star Alliance miles. Philly to Rome with them is another way to do it.
Doing a RT with Connie's April TA on our minds. RT is Chicago to Rome, Frankfurt to Chicago. Sorry, but if I can, I try to stay off of US Air. Sometimes I can't (Charleston, Ft. Lauderdale, etc) and then we bite the bullet. Much prefer Swiss Air. Since we were originally told it would cost 260,000 miles, the 135,000 pp is a bargain. The miles won't make too much of a dent, either.
I e-mailed Ronald on 6/1/ The info@holiday address gave me an error and I have not heard anything back from him after using the info@masca address.
Just so we don't get locked out, I went ahead and booked two tickets on TF21 4x4 excursion. There was just one tour offered and it departs at 8:00 AM. That's pretty early, but we can sleep for the next 5 days.
If we can get in touch with him and arrange something, I can always cancel this.

Hi Bob.
I think it's good to have booked an alternative. Especially, as I am pretty sure than Ronnie doesn't have anything to do with off-road or open vehicles. He is certainly not going to help his business IF his website is not up and running AND he is not answering eMails promptly.
Good choice!

Bob, I have booked that tour too and Joanie and George are coming along also. I'm looking forward to it

We are on it too. Booked it several day ago, just to be on the safe side. I'll have the camera batteries charged and my hair will look ready to be wind blown.
