    Emerald Princess launched

Emerald Princess, delivering in spring 2007, was launched this morning at Fincantieri's Monfalcone yard. The 113,000gt Princess Cruises' ship will be floated out of the dock by midday tomorrow reports the builder.

The ship's godmother was Mrs Jenny Arkinstall, wife of Charles Arkinstall - newbuild advisor of P&O Princess Cruises, who has been involved in Princess Cruises' newbuilding programme at Monfalcone since the first Crown Princess in 1990.

Earler this year Arkinstall retired from his post as svp, maritime affairs at Carnival Corp & plc but stayed on in a part-time capacity as the divisional representative of P&O Princess Cruises for its newbuild projects.

Jewel of a ship comes to region

Princess Cruises newest ship the 3,100-passenger Emerald Princess will sail from Fort Lauderdale in the 2007-08 season, the cruise line confirmed last week. The $525 million ship, after sailing the summer in Alaska, will offer 10-day cruises to southern Caribbean ports, often the least crowded in the area. It will alternate those trips with voyages to islands in the eastern Caribbean.

The equally large Caribbean Princess will offer seven-day eastern Caribbean itineraries, while the Grand Princess will take over the seven-day western Caribbean route from Star Princess.

Most of those cruises will be offered regularly from late October to early April. Coral Princess will make a special 7-day holiday cruise from Port Everglades on Dec. 20, 2007.

And the 680-passenger Royal Princess, which formerly sailed for Fort Lauderdale-based Renaissance Cruises, will offer a 16-day southern Caribbean holiday itinerary that includes three new ports of call for Princess: Samana (Dominican Republic); Virgin Gorda (British Virgin Islands) and Bequia (the Grenadines). It will sail on voyages to the Amazon from Port Everglades in 2008.

Send items for this column to tstieghorst@sun-sentinel. com or call 305-810-5008.

NB: This article is longer but I did not include the other info as it does not pertain to the subject of this thread.

I can't wait for this ship to start doing the 10 day Southern and Eastern Caribbean trips!! Some different Ports to explore and a new ship!! We're not so fond of the Sun Princess, we prefer the larger ships!! I'm so excited!! Thanks for the info~~

I won't be on the first cruise. I'll let the kinks be worked out before I set foot onboard, anywhere from 4 months to a year later.
