I'm dying to go to Egypt and, I too, never associated beaches with Egypt. The funny thing was, in Tahiti (I'm still working on that review!) they ran advertisements all the time for a Visit Egypt campaign and it was all beaches and snorkeling and water sports, and, of course, pyramids.

Isn't it wonderful how you can think you know something about a place and be pleasantly surprised to learn something totally different? It's like when we sailed into Rhodes, Greece and I saw a big English style castle on the horizon that looked like something that was used by Medieval Knights. Not what I imagined I'd see in Greece!
We got back last night so I am still waiting for the snail mail to be delievered from the last 10 days.
I have answered this on several different threads so I might be duplicating myself here.
We went to Egypt in October of 2001, barely 6 weeks after 9/11. Security was very tight and quite honestly we only saw other tourists (we were a group of 54) towards the end of the trip at the Valley of the Kings. We had a wonderful time! I might add here that most of the sites to be seen are along either bank of the Nile so a Nile Cruise is really necessary to see the ancient sites.
I would strongly recommend that you contact Grand Circle Travel. People of all ages travel with them. They own their own boats on the Nile and the comfort level is very high. Most importantly, they cruise down one side of the Nile and then spend time coming back the other side so you see both in a week rather than bouncing along both sides in a matter of 3-4 days on a one-way boat trip like all the other boats do. They also offer the opportunity to visit in private homes as well as take you to all major sites in Egypt. The primary pyramids at Giza are actually in the suburbs of Cairo so you will get to see them without a special trip. Interesting factoid- there are over 100 pyramids in Egypt!
Egypt is a beautiful Country once you are out of teh crowded city of Cairo. The Pyramids of Giza are an experience to remember. I actually took a cruise on the Nubian Sea. We started from Abu Simbal. These are some temples moved uphill in order for the waters to be flooded in the 1960's. To me Abu Simbal was a must see sight.
I also cruised up the Nile from Aswan to Luxor. If you want your history then this is the cruise to take. As you will see Edfu temples, Karnak, Luxor Temples, Valley of the Kings and Valley of the Queens. The light and sound shows at Luxor and Karnak are spectacular.
At Luxor I stayed at Crocodile Island. This was a small island on the Nile which is so beautiful. Water taxis leave every few minutes to take you to Luxor town.
Rick and John, thank you so much for the details and info. Now I really want to go! A Nile cruise will definitely be part of the trip...I can only imagine how fun that's going to be...

Hello THL, I've been to Egypt a number of times but the most recent visit was to Sharm el Sheikh. Living here in St Petersburg I've noticed what seems tobe a mass migration when it gets cold to either Turkey or Egypt by Russians seeking sun, fun and warmth. I tagged along this last fall having never visited with such a group of young active Russians. Other than the obvious warmth and beautiful beaches these kids go because it is cheap.....really cheap. I got my booking 2 days before the flight. For 10 days in a 5 star resort, all inclusive, including air from St Petersburg or Moscow, the total was $585!! That is cheaper than staying at home. While it was -15 at home, it was +27 air temp and +24 water temp. and all the food I could eat in Sharm el Sheikh. The other magnet for sun and relaxing resorts from here is Turkey where similar prices are available but it is primarily a spring and summer destination. My room was very nice, not quite 5 Star despite the claims but much better than my own bedroom in St Petersburg. I saw little of Egypt except water, from above or below the surface, the warm crystal clean sand beaches, the dining rooms and the discos. I sat in the sand or swam if out side and ate, slept or danced if indoors. I have never seen a better deal or more relaxing get-a-way.
Just something to consider when wanting to get away when not cruising.
When I first talked to you it from the warmth of my bed nursing a bronchial infection but then jumped on a bus and went to the office for a brief while and then headed home on foot. Now sitting in my warm bed asking myself why I went out with a bronchial infection in -24 weather? Well, my latest weather report said it was not -24 but -29 with a wind chill of -32 when I walked home against a wind. Dumb! I need to be on the beach in Sharm el Sheikh. When it gets really cold my brain freezes;>)
THL,
Don't know if you listen to morning radio, but the hosts on 103.7 just got back from a trip to Egypt and were talking about it all morning. They will probably have a lot more to say over the next few days.

Stan, for goodness sakes take care of yourself or you might never go to Egypt (or anywhere else) again!
As nice as the warm water and beaches sound, there is no way I am going to Egypt without seeing the antiquities. That's what the trip would be all about for me. I get plenty of warm weather here in Texas and we go to some beachy place at least once a year...so I get my fill of sun and swimming. It's the old stuff I am after when I look toward Egypt. That does sound like a good price for your Egyptian vacation, though. Is it typically that inexpensive there?

I wonder if 103.7 is the same station on the eastside of Mars as it would be here in the Metroplex...
