Can anyone recommend excursions during 1 day in Alexandria 7 am to 10 pm ? If you have recommendations of excursions not to take that would be gratefully received. Is wandering around the city alone is worthwhile ?

When I went to Alexandria, I did a trip to the pyramids. A very long time on a coach at quite high speed on not very nice roads. We got a packed lunch on the day and then went to a hotel for a buffet after visiting the pyramids.
I am glad I went but with all the people and coaches etc they were not quite how I expected. One of the best parts was leaving the hotel for the journy home at dusk and seeing the great pyramid in the sun set.
Thanks Stephen, can you remember how long the ride was ? and how long you had to visit ? there is no way we could visit Egypt and miss the Pyramids

It takes about 3 hours each way from Alexandria to Cairo. When you calculate the time to get on the buses and off the buses, this does not leave you alot of time.
This is one place where it pays you to do an itinerary that has the ship spending the night in Alexandria.
I have a company I've used for several of our clients and have always received very good reviews - unfortunately, we're traveling right now and I don't have access to my files. When we get back into the office, I'll try to remember to look it up and let you know who they are.

My wife said she believes it was Champion Tours (HOME | Champion Tours Egypt, excursions, tour packages, Sharm, Hurghada, Luxor, Aswan and more). I'll verify that when we get home.

As Pete has said it's about a 3 hour run. On the tour we did we went to the pyramids and of course a visit to a shop. I think we spent more time at the hotel for the buffet than at the Pyramids themselves so we did not get long and it was about an 11 hour trip.
A nice touch was when we got back to the ship as were waiting to get back on board the Captain came out to welcome us home and they were handing out iced water and orange juice![]()
We visited Egypt in November on our Norwegian Jade Tour. This was one place where we stuck with the ship tour, I know we could have saved money doing it on our own with others but I wanted the safety and Security of the ship. We had an armed guard in our bus and were often under a police escort. If it is okay I would like to post a copy of a review of one of the private tours that friends of ours took while on the cruise.

We just returned from a Ramses overnight tour in November. Unfortunately, we got the lemonwhile others had an excellent experience. Being promised upon our return that the guide (Mr. Khalifa) would no longer be employed by Ramses will not help us to get past what was a trying experience at best. Its not like we'll be going back. That having been said, the pyramids are AWSOME! Be sure to look past the filth that is Alexandria & Cairo.... all of Egypt? and enjoy the view of the Pyramids and the Sphynx. Keep your eyes closed however when it comes to the Egyptians and their 'traffic laws'. There are none. Thank God we arrived back to the ship in one piece. Our tour bus ended up with a scrape that was 4 feet
up the side of the bus from where he hit a curb and the thing started to go over. I guess it wa a blessing that there was an overpass with a guardrail!."
The important point here is that you need to know who you are booking with and how they operate as not all private tours are equal even when booked with the same company.
