A sister cruise line to American Safari Cruises,
InnerSea Discoveries, will be less expensive and focused on adventures at sea.
InnerSea Discoveries and American Safari Cruises are headed by CEO Dan Blanchard, who was CEO of American Safari Cruises from 2001 to October 2008.
When he bought the American Safari Cruises brand in February, Blanchard said the company planned to add more brands to its portfolio. InnerSea is the first of those brands.
Slated to debut in 2011, the new brand will take adventure travelers on wildlife-centric itineraries through Alaska’s Inside Passage.
InnerSea has acquired two ships from the defunct Glacier Bay Cruiseline to launch the brand.
The 80-passenger Wilderness Discoverer and 66-passenger Wilderness Adventurer are currently out of commission. The ships will undergo an extensive renovation before entering service for InnerSea but will keep their names, said Tim Jacox, InnerSea’s executive vice president of sales and marketing.
InnerSea will be substantially less expensive than American Safari Cruises, which charges $850 to $1,500 per passenger, per day. InnerSea’s cruises will start at around $300 per passenger, per day, but items such as alcoholic beverages and tips will be extra, Jacox said.
The ships will offer seven-day trips between Ketchikan and Juneau, but the ships won’t stop in ports along the way, instead spending the journey sailing through fjords, around glaciers and through the islands and coastal cruising areas of Southeast Alaska.
The itineraries will take passengers on Zodiacs to explore glaciers and wildlife up close, and will make landings for guided hikes through remote areas.
The ships will carry their own fully equipped fishing boats, one of several excursions guests can take.
