Exclamation Dominican Republic Health Advisory from Princess

Received a Health Advisory from Princess reguarding our upcoming cruise with a port stop in Santo Domingo.

Seems cholera has become a problem ... more so in some places there than others.

The warning is the usual sort of thing: Don't drink the water or buy food from vendors. Don't eat raw fruits & vegetables or anything else that's not very well done. Avoid all fish & shellfish.... etc. etc.

We did not berth in Santo Domingo, our port of call was the Isla Catalina. We took an excursion to Santo Domingo, which involved over an hour coach trip each way.

Impressions of Dominica Republic was mainly poverty, and degraded houses, Thought what we saw, what must it be like in Haiti.

Santa Domingo we only saw what the guides wanted us to see so a lasting impression I'm afraid I cannot give. We went to the house of Christopher Columbus son, went into a church were a soldier was on guard duty, can't remember what he was guarding.

When we returned had to admit a land holidays in Dominica Republic which are popular in UK, would not be to our taste.

As Hanna says her advice is to stay on the ship, I do not wish to return.

I didn't like Casa De Campo when we went there on our first cruise. Man eating mosquitoes and box jellyfish among other things made our visit very unpleasant. When we booked our cruise in 2009, one of the ports was Samana. I told my husband it would be a spa day, but after becoming friends with a great guy (who is now a Facebook friend ) on the other group, he told me how wonderful they found the beach break was. It softened me enough to book the excursion. It turned out to be one of the highlights of our trip. We were docked along with the Sea Princess that particular day. We took our Santa hats and enjoyed the white powdery sand, light breezes and a guitar playing in the distance. Met some lovely passengers from the Sea Princess and had a great time. This is so sad, because you don't have to be a rocket scientist to figure out that the people there are very poor. Someone on our ship organized a drive of gifts for a school in Samana and we were witness to a lovely day of giving by this group of children that were brought over. The comedian from the ship came over and did a show for them while the gifts were distributed. Thanks to Terry, it ended up being a special day!
