Dark Warrior, as you know, I loved Dominica. It's such a change from the typical Caribbean islands. The driving in town is positively horrifying!! Narrow two way streets with no rules that are apparent and people everywhere, even cooking in the street!! Wild!!
And to make matters worse the drivers scare the heck out of ya. They're good though. As our tour guide said, if you can drive here without getting in an accident (specifically, the mountain roads), you can drive anywhere. That's how hard it is.
We booked a snorkeling tour to the Champagne Reef. The bubbles come up from a volcanic vent in the ocean floor and are nice and warm. Actually, the water is hot if you get it in a snorkel tube straight from the bottom. There was a lot of sealife in the area of the warmer water too.
We shall have to try that, whenever we get to return there..... Sounds exciting and different...
We were there for the first time in 2002 and have been back several times. At first we didn't think we would like the island. But now we love it. It is so lush and green. We found the people to be very friendly. We have done tours to the Emerald Pool, Trafalgar Falls and the rain forest - all great.
CLF HAL Guide - Hi - my name is Yonnie Eurodam 11/22; Eurodam 11/29; Noordam 2/2; Noordam 2/12 Cruising is a wonderful way to enjoy retirement!!
The last couple of times we were there this past spring, the street in front of the main pier was blocked off from all traffic except for the tour buses and taxis from about 8:30 AM until 3:30 AM. It made it very easy to walk around.

I agree with the driving. OMG, I really feared for my life, but we made it. Some of the roads were so narrow and winding that the tour bus driver had to blow his horn as he was rounding the curve so others knew we were approaching. At one point, we had to back down a road into a drive area because it was so narrow, only 1 car could fit on the road at a time, and they don't drive slow mind you. The rainforest was the hilight for me. I've always wanted to see one, and to stand in the middle of this dense, gorgeous eco-system truly was a wonder. I was also impressed with the educational system of this country. It so so pitifully poor an area, yet every schoolchild was walking from school for lunch in a clean, pressed uniform. Our driver said there is a tremendous emphasis on education in Dominica and children start school at 4 years of age.

That's exactly how I felt going on the cruise. That's why I took the excursion. It was amazing. I'd love to do it again. I'd also like to see what it'd be like if it wasn't pouring rain.
