Dominica

We have been to Dominica many, many times. And we do love the beauty of the island.

But for the first time we had to dock at the Woodbridge Bay Port Pier as the Noordam had the main pier in Roseau. When I leanred about this weeks before we sailed we thought it was going to be a wasted day. Actually it turned out better than we expected. If you wanted to go into town it was $2 per person each way -- and there were several taxis always waiting.

There was a wharehouse that has been emptied and converted for the merchants to set up their tables. We couldn't believe the quality of the utems they had for sale. Much better than the vendors in town. (Yes I am aware of the poverity of the island.) They had beautiful Caribbean shirts -- DH said that he wished he had come here before we went to Hawaii -- better and cheaper -- made of polyester. Lots of spices -- hand crafted items.

I would be glad to return to this pier any time!!

KK ... Thanks for the report on the Woodbridge Pier. Have wondered what it's like. Even when doing an excursion, it's nice to know there's something there when we return! Thanks!

How does the shopping compare to the other islands? We thought we'd buy spices in Grenada. Any info will be appreciated!

Dominica is not a shopping port -- only a couple of stores.

You would be better off buying your spices in Grenada.

This time when we were at Dominica, we did the whale watch and dolphin tour. We were not disappointed. Whales were spotted when we were only out about ten minutes. We got many photo opportunites and didn't even mind getting rained on.

Here's a website I found about Dominica: Discover Dominica: the Nature Island. Dive, hike, discover... and defy the popular notion of a Caribbean vacation

From the above-referenced site's front page:

Welcome to Dominica, an island as lush as it is unspoiled.

Dominica surges from the sea with soaring peaks that seem to be courting the heavens. Virgin flora covers these dramatic mountains, creating swaths of verdant landscapes. The residue of the fiery forces that created the island thousands of years ago, as part of the Caribbean Ring of Fire, bellows in several hot springs, valleys of steaming earth, and a boiling lake which is the second largest in the world. Along with geothermal wonders come natural coolants: hundreds of pristine rivers and streams web the island's lush terrain. Pure rainwater sets brooks and cascades into motion by rushing down picturesque cliffs.

Dominica's natural wonders and rich cultural heritage make it an exceptional ecotourism destination

That website seems to have lots to offer -
Maps. photos, a little history, information for travelers, a WEBCAM, even a contest to win a trip there.
