lagranny, I don't have any photos to offer you, but in general, handicapped accessible cabins have added space to allow a wheelchair or scooter to turn around. They also have restrooms designed for someone who has hampered mobility.

I see that this cabin is turned 90 degrees from the other inside cabins on your deck, and they may feel that the different orientation is enough to help you maneuver. The deck plan I found shows that they can put a third and fourth passenger in there, but I am guessing that the beds pull down from the ceiling or the wall,so that will not give you extra floor space.

Norwegian Spirit is an older ship and therefore the cabins are smaller. It was built when most people felt a cabin was only for sleeping, and your cabin reflects that.

I am concerned because the deck plan I am looking at does not indicate that this is a handicapped cabin. This could mean that you will have many issues with this cabin, and not just in floor space. Handicapped cabins should have a black box next to the cabin number, and yours does not. The two inside HC cabins on deck 10, appear to be twice the size of your cabin.

I am not an NCL expert, but I would still get this addressed ASAP. If you booked through a travel agent, they should handle this for you.

I sincerely appreciate your input. I had no idea about the cabins on Deck 10. I have called NCL MANY MANY times about the cabin size. Each time I have caled I have encountered someone that didn't seem to have a clue about anything I asked pertaining to the cabin sizes in SQ. footage or set up in the bathrooms. We have just recently found out that my brother and his wife, who is also handicapped, may be joining us. The last person that I spoke with at NCL assured me that the cabin was plenty big enough for us.They said that for the 3rd and 4th passenger there is a trundle bed and an upper berth bed. I believe that I will have to make sure that my brother will be able to climb up to the upper birth bed. I also need to call NCL and see what the weight limit is on the upper birth bed is, as my brother weighs close to 200 pounds. I am going to call NCL shortly and ask about the 10th deck HCA cabins. Your response was the best one I received. I have seen the handi capped cabins on Carnival and was hoping they would be comparable. Evindently not. I have also learned that most of the NCL people aren't that knowledgable about MANY things. I believe I am going to make sure I take plenty of pictures of the handi capped room and post it for other who may have the same questions I did.Once again,"Thank You" for your help.

lagranny, I am so sorry that you can't get the info you need from NCL. To be fair, I think you will find that most people who man the phones for the mainstream cruiselines are there strictly to sell cabins. They will provide info, but in general it will be exactly what is on the website.

Carnival and their brands (Princess, Holland America and others) have the roomiest cabins. The other lines are starting to build bigger cabins, but the older ships have very little floor space.

I would not want to have 4 people in the cabin you are currently booked in, if 2 of them are handicapped. It's one thing to have to maneuver around in tight quarters for things you must do, but this is supposed to be your vacation. People will say that cabins are just for sleeping, but when you have a physical handicap, it takes longer to get settled for sleep and longer to get ready to leave the cabin.

If you can't get a proper HC cabin, I recommend writing directly to Norwegian Special Needs department at accessdesk@ncl.com

or their corporate office at 305.436.4000
    or
    NCL Corporation Ltd.
    7665 Corporate Center Drive
    Miami, Florida 33126

    Hours of Operation: Mon-Fri: 9am - 5pm ET

Don't wait, since they don't have many of these cabins available.

Mary, I found a VERY comprehensive guide for cruising with disabilities. The focus is mostly on Holland America, but there is good advice throughout, including how to get through the airport on the way to the cruise.
Handicapped Cruising Information for Holland America Lines

It does not have pictures, but it does list all the HAL HA cabins, and I think that is an excellent starting point.

If you use this link, please verify the cabins with the HAL website, since the ships are being updated and some of the cabin numbers may have changed.

    HAL cabin pictures

This is a website put together by a member of another cruise forum, and she accepts contributions of cabin pictures from one and all. Joanie uses a walker and scooter, so is an expert on the HA cabins. I met her on a sailing on Westerdam. If you are looking for a particular cabin picture, don't limit yourself to the ship you are sailing, search the other ships in the same class. Carolyn

And now I have another question: Can I post cabin pictures directly here (from a photo hosting site) rather than posting a link? They are located all over my Photobucket and Kodak Gallery accounts...Carolyn

Just discovered this site specific to Holland America. They have a section on it that pertains to Handicap (HC) cabins. A number of photos too:

    This is for the Westerdam.

Here's the link to the main site where you can research other ships:
