I guess it depends on other desserts on the menu sounded more interesting than the Baked Alaska. The waiters always push the BA onto every one's plate. So if I order another dessert, I'll take a scoop of the merengue.

OK - the parade is some fun, but personally, I have never actually partaken of the desert myself... and I just don't "get" it. After all, it IS basically ice cream, isn't it?

What am I missing here?
It's the tradition of the sea! There was a time when baked ice cream was extraordinary! ......and a parade of flaming ice cream was a festive occasion ending up with the singing of Auld Lang Syne. A moment to carry with you of the camaraderie and good time you enjoyed while on your cruise....beconing you to come back and enjoy it again. It's about the emotion of the moment, not the deliciousness of the dessert.

Well, it is actually a bit more. It is cake, ice cream and meringue covering the whole mix. It is then torched to make the outside crust a rich golden. Is it that great a dessert? I would say no but it is the presentation that makes it so much fun. Just like bananas foster. It, too, would only be good if it were not set aflame.

Neal, do you make Baked Alaska at home? I do...Bob request's it for his birthday. His favorite combination is poundcake with butter pecan ice cream and almond flavored meringue.
