usually went to buffet for bkfst & lunch (if on board or the fast food places on board). and dining room for dinner. this time, going to split the bkfst between our balcony/cabin and buffet and lunch wiil be ashore mostly, only have one day at sea this time. and going for a balcony dinner one night, to celebrate anniv. will try at least one of the specialty rest. too. going for variety this time.
For breakfast and lunch, we actually do a mix of buffet and MDR. We liked the breakfast in the main dining room and it was far less crowded. Lunch depended on the menu offered in the MDR, sometimes there wasn't anything that really caught our attention. Dinner always the MDR and the speciality restaurant once during the week.
I have food allergies ... breakfast not an issue, lunch normally not an issue, but dinner can be a real problem, so by chosing the main dining room I have someone who is aware of my allergies and works with me to get the right items that I can eat. Typically they have me order from the menu the night before. Kind of funny to order when you are already full for the next night, but it works well. Both Princess and Carnival have done this. Not sure how RCCL handles it, I've already notified them via e-mail about the allergies. I'm sure it will be similar to the others. Our first 2 cruises with RCCL, I never said anything. Have learned that is NOT a good idea. So now we always notify them about my allergies. I take a printed card that I also give the waiter and head waiter with my table # etc. Then there is no misunderstanding on the foods I am allergic too.
I have food allergies too. I wish the buffet would have more description as to the dishes. I had served myself an "Asian Stirfry" according to the little sign. When I sat down and looked at the plate, I realized there was shrimp mixed in. Would have been a major, major problem if I had eaten that. I did note that on my comment card that certain ingredients need to be noted.
I also suggested large signs over the serving islands to indicate what foods are available. That may be one way to make the lines move faster if people knew what they wanted before they get to the front of the line. Princess does often put the items on a sign in the buffet room, but not necessarily where people would see it if they get immediately in line. You will still get people who insist on waiting to see what the items look like, but it may cut down on "Martha, do you think I should get this?" that you hear while waiting hungerily behind.

This is a VERY good thread and an "eye opener" to me because I never considered how hard it is for those with food allergies or on special diets to find food for breakfast or lunch.

Lars, there is no lower sodium option on the dinner menu. They have a healthy choice type of thing and it gives the fat & carbs & calories but, so far, does NOT tell you the sodium content. It would be nice if they added that info. The waiter will bring you the next night's menu and you choose what you want to be prepared salt free. It has to be done in advance.
As far as I know, there is no option for special preparation of meals at lunch time. Perhaps it could be done in advance, but we never tried.
If you are planning to choose the hot dishes that are pre-prepared in the buffet, then you will be loading your plate with salt! Also the prepared salads have huge amounts of salt. Fruit, salads that you make yourself (watch the dressing...it is loaded with salt) the meat at the carvery (except the ham) are all good choices. Cheese has about 170 mg per ounce (some is higher..this is average) so you can have a bit of cheese. Bread is loaded with salt! Cookies have a lot of salt, too! Forget the muffins and croissants.
For breakfast Bob will have made to order eggs (no salt there) 1 piece of whole grain toast, and fruit. Or sometimes he will have cereal & milk with fruit. Look at the sodium content on the cereal boxes...some are very high.
We are amazed at what they can prepare for dinner that tastes really good without all the salt. Especially the soups. Soups are notoriously high in salt, but Bob has gotten some delicious hot soups without salt. Cold soups are very low in salt anyway, except for the gazpacho.
You can have a very enjoyable eating experience if you forget all the old foods you used to eat and try new things. Nothing will ever tase like those long remembered favorites, but you can have fun figuring out what your new favorites will be.
Great attitude Char! You are to be commended. More folks should try not to dwell on what they can't have. I like that "figuring out what your new favorites will be".

Fortunately I can eat anything, well perhaps for weight control I shouldn't.....
I find that eating in the dining room for breakfast and lunch takes longer than I care to spend eating when there is so much else to do, even if it is just looking at the ocean!
I'm up early and go up top for coffee and then pick and choose what I want at the buffet. Then I might wander through the buffet around lunch time for a munchie or two. I have had a hamburger at the grill occasionally, like once ever other cruise.
By eating light during the day I am hungry at dinner to enjoy all those wonderful items!

Never eaten breakfast or lunch in the MDR... what would some options on the menu be on an RC ship? I might want to try it as I got tired of the buffet food quickly on my last 2 cruises. I eat very healthy, with an occasional rueben/fries or dessert thrown in - just a little extra time in the fitness room the next day. I have V8 every morning - could I get that in a MDR as I can't at the buffet...
I don't want to spend an hour eating breakfast though ...
On NCL breakfast in the Grand Pacific - time to have an unhurried breakfast something that never happens at home. Being waited on is a great start to the day.
Lunch - would love to go to the restaurant but they close around 1.30pm too early for us - lunch is never before 2.30pm so its buffet - which is good as you can just eat light - soup and a salad.
Dinner around 9 to 9.30 and again restaurant - start and end the day as you mean to go on!!
We prefer the dining room for breakfast except on days we have excursions, then we have room service or buffet. On norwegian we found the lunches in the dining room excellent but on carnival we didn't like the lunch menu so we ate at the buffet. We prefer sitting, talking with others, and being served. Everything at the buffet for breakfast can be had in the dining room.
Sailing on the NCL Spirit Feb 14th New Orleans to Western Caribbean.
Norwegian Gem NY to Bahamas
Carnival Triumph to Canada
We usually tackle the buffet for breakfast and lunch on ship days, although, with my wife they are the same thing. She likes to lounge around until 10 or so on sea days so the dining room is out.
