We were in Curacao in October 05. We rented a car right at the ship dock because we wanted to see things in town (the Curacao liquor factory, the Caves near the airport [very interesting!]) and I wanted to see the nature park at the far end of the island. Skip the nature park. We did the driving section, not the hiking side, and it wasn't that much. My husband was bitten by some kind of no-see-ums and needed meds from the ship's doctor to get comfortable.

Street maps are very detailed but many/most streets don't have name signs so navigating is a little tricky. We did get misdirected (lost) a couple times but did get to see some neighborhoods off the main highways.

A couple at our dining room table just went to the cab stand at the dock and did get to the factory, the caves, both sides of the city and did some shopping. They paid very little and had a wonderful time. That will be our choice next time. The town is so pretty that I want to wander neighborhoods.

Since you are doing the Panama cruise, we found the canopy tour in Panama very pretty but not much in the way of animals. Even tho the trams are very quiet, the noise they do make keeps the animals away. Depends what you want to experience.

Has anyone rented a car and traveled to some of the beaches around the island? We are a family of ten and were thinking of renting a 10 passenger van, piling in and checking it out...Would assume that driving the island is similar to driving in Aruba? Beach suggestions? Looking for calm waters which are not packed to the gills with other tourists?
