I got this email from Cunard today
We are delighted to bring you this update on the construction of our newest Cunarder, Queen Elizabeth, currently being built at the Fincantieri shipyard in Monfalcone, Italy.
Fincantieri, who also built Queen Victoria who joined the fleet in 2007, have a total of 600 employees dedicated to the construction of the first sections of the hull. Senior representatives from Cunard are closely monitoring every step of the production process to ensure that everything runs according to plan.
The steel plates required to complete the construction of her hull have all been commissioned and these weigh a total of 18,000 tonnes. On 18 September 2008 the very first steel plate was cut and this was recognised with a dedicated ceremony.
To date 12 main sections have been constructed. The keel laying section, which is the first section to be laid in the dry dock, has already been built and it is anticipated that the keel laying will be in June 2009 and in keeping with tradition will be marked with a special ceremony.
