Cunard Line has announced that its iconic Queen Mary 2 will call Australia its home-away-from-home in 2012.
The majestic vessel will spend 28 nights in Australian waters during its “Royal Circumnavigation of Australia.”
Queen Mary 2 will call at eight ports during her time in Australia including Sydney, Fremantle, Adelaide and the Whitsundays as well as maiden visits to Cairns (Yorkey’s Knob), Darwin, Melbourne and Brisbane. The history-making circumnavigation will also include a call to Bali.
Australian cruisers will have the choice of three circumnavigation options – a 22-night voyage departing Sydney on February 14, 2012, a 20-night voyage departing Fremantle on February 8, 2012 and a 21-night voyage departing Adelaide on February 11, 2012.
The largest vessel to ever visit Australia, Queen Mary 2 will sail from Cape Town to Sydney via Fremantle and Adelaide, and then circumnavigate the country.
Subsequently, Fremantle, Adelaide and Sydney will each enjoy two visits from the liner during her time in Australia.
The 2012 Australian deployment will be the longest Queen Mary 2 has been based in one country outside of her northern hemisphere home ports of Southhampton and New York.
Speaking onboard the vessel during its third visit to Sydney yesterday, Ann Sherry, CEO of Carnival Australia said the decision was expected to generate an economic windfall across the country.
“This one decision will generate at least $10 million for the Australian economy as the local cruise industry remains on track to contribute more than $3 billion and carry one million Australians annually by 2020.”
The Royal Circumnavigation will go on sale mid-year, which gives Cunard ample time to finalize itinerary details with the various port authorities around Australia.
Cunard will be taking expressions of interest for its “Royal Circumnavigation of Australia” from this Friday, March 12.*
Australian cruisers will also be able to join Queen Mary 2 as she sails to Australia from Cape Town, and as she departs Sydney on March 7, 2012, bound for Singapore.
Now halfway through her 101-day world voyage, the Queen Mary 2 arrived in Sydney in spectacular fashion on Sunday afternoon (March 7) for a rare overnight call.
The vessel then left the city at midnight Monday March 8 bound for Adelaide, then Fremantle.
