Harry, So you personnally do know Stephen Payne? I did meet him aboard the QM2 in October of 2007 during a transatlantic crossing and he did sign my copy of a book about the glory days of transatlantic ship travel called "The Only Way To Cross" written by John Maxtone Graham.I also did another back2back transatlantic crossing a month ago aboard the QM2 from June 19th to July 1st.And I am booked for another back2back transatlantic crossing aboard the QM2 next April 15th to April 29th.The nice thing about the crossings next April is that both the Eastbound and Westbound crossings are 7 nights long each.Regards,Jerry
I'd say we are both pretty good friends, yes. We're in contact quite often with eachother.
I bumped into him when I was watching QM2 sail out of Southampton, we spoke and kept in touch ever since!

Harry according to your posts it says that you are a Junior Naval Architect.Does this mean that you are interested in a career as a naval architect? Maybe you'll be another Stephen Payne and design another Cunard Queen Regards,Jerry

I am a Junior Member of RINA or The Royal Institution of Naval Architects. My dream would be to do what Stephen Payne did and build the next best Ocean Liner! Hopefully one day my dream comes true.
If you want to see or read a bit more about me, you could visit my Cruise Ship Interest Thread, within the Introduce Yourself forum. There's a lot to catch up on if you do.

Here is my first hand report on the accident. Unfortunately, I did not see it, but I felt it.
I was on deck and could see a wall of cloud coming and it started to rain so I went inside. A few seconds later a call went out along the lines of "all hands to emergency mooring stations". A minute or two later I felt the bump as we hit the dock.
There were two gangways, one of which was about 40 feet long. This ended up hanging down from the side of the ship and touching the bottom of the harbour. The Captain had to cause the ship to list to port to free the gangway from the bottom of the dock so they could get it back into place.
The tours started to arrive back soon after so there were about 10 or more coaches full of people waiting to get back on board.
The Captain came on within minutes of the accident to explain what happened and made regular announcements to keep us informed of progress. We had to wait for a man from the insurance company to attend to give us the all clear before could sail. The Captain said, he thought that any other ship would have suffered much more damage, but QM2 is a true liner and built of stronger stuff.
