    Cunard in Alaska

I've not been on many cruises, so help me remember if the Regent Sea was a Cunard ship that sailed Alaska waaaay back in 1986. I'll be going on the QE2, end of March thru the Panama Canal. Will be rooming on deck five. Any hints, suggestions you all can give on formal wear, shore excursions in Acapulco, Costa Rica, Jamaica and/or Fort Lauderdale, etc., etc. would be appreciated.

The Regent Sea belonged to Regency Cruises from 1984 to 1995.

She began life in 1957 as the Gripsholm, built for the Swedish American Line.

Then, she was sold to a Greek line, Karageorgis Lines, in 1976, and renamed the Navarino.

In 1981, she was severely damaged during a grounding. After this, she was sold to Comodore cruises, who intended to refurbish her. However, there was a fire and other mishaps during the dridock, and Commodore never sailed her.

After yet another change of hands, and names, whe was finally sold to Regency Cruises in 1984.

After Regency wend bankrupt in 1995, she languished in a shipyard in Freeport until United States American Cruise Lines bought her at auction in 1997, with the intention of turning her into a gambling venue named just Sea. However, the new owners ran out of money before they could complete their transformation.

In 2001, she began her last journey - to the breakers. But, she never made it there. She sunk in rough seas near the Cape of Good Hope.

LONG ANSWER SHORT: The Regent Sea was never a Cunard ship.

this is a much abbreviated version of information I found at:

I think it was Cunard Countess that was in Alaska in the 80's.

Tip for QE2 deck 5, don't use the stairs its a long way up. Take some ear plugs there can be a lot of engine noise down there.

QE2 is very formal so for men that means a jacket and tie on informal nights and a suit / dinner suit for formal nights. Ladies can never be overdressed on QE2 but you don't need ball gowns, a cocktail dress or trouser suit will do.

Cruises booked: Queen Victoria August 2012 and Queen Elizabeth December 2012.

I saw the Cunard Countess in 1983 in Skagway, Alaska.
