I've never flown from Stanstead. All I know is that it's a fair way out of London and therefore a lot cheaper (That normally means it's smaller and the journey is more pleasant). Details about getting to London are here

Kathy, it's smaller than Gatwick or Heathrow, thus usually it is quicker to get through all the usual security checks etc there. And the baggage handlers seem to be somewhat better. I see that Malcolm has already given you a link for getting to London.

thank you both for the info.

My next two trips to Enlgand are already booked (Virgin Air had a good fare sale in August). Because we usually visit friends in Yorkshire, we have often started there with a flight from Newark to Manchester, which has the advantage of being a reasonable size and easy to navigate. But Continental has really upped the price of that flight so much that we're flying in and out of the dreaded Heathrow.

I will definitely investigate these new (to me) options!

I love Stanstead security. We were through it in less than five minutes. The person at the counter asked us if we had anything to declare, asked us what we were doing in the country, and wished us a great time in England.

Nothing could be easier and simpler than that (we heard that people on our cruise who arrived in Heathrow had hour long lines)

Stanstead is a way out but you can get either a cab (expensive) a shared vehicle (what we did) or use mass transit. The trip into the city was our first time to London and slowly brought up the excitement level the closer we got to the city.

I don't think I've ever made it through the immigration line in under an hour at Heathrow. Certainly not in the last 15 years or so. Last summer I think it was an hour and a half.

Whenever they ask if I have something to declare, I'm tempted to use the Oscar Wilde line "I have nothing to declare but my genius. " I'm afraid to do it, though, immigration/security people aren't a humorous lot.

I was thinking more in terms of Gone with the Wind "I declare Miss Scarlett, I know nothing about birthin' babies....."
