On Delta you can order special diets right on the web site. Just pull up your reservation and there is a place to request special services. We have to order low/no salt meals for my hubby and they have his meal ready for him.

Check with your airline...go online or call...to see what they are able to privide for your special need.
Yep, Swiss International does serve a meal on our flight, and I have a request in for a "diabetic meal". The problem will be that it will probably still have more carbs than I'm allotted. I'll guess it will have around 60 grams of carbs, whereas I try to keep it to 10 grams per meal. Still, its easy to skip the things I know have the extra carbs or sugar.

When we trade sugar-for-fat or fat-for-sugar, that's not good either.

Char, guess The Bobster has given up boiled peanuts -- can't imagine eating them not cooked in very salty water!

No, he didn't have to give them up....never liked them!

You can get roasted peanuts with no salt or lightly salted.

Hubby and I switched to a low carb, high protein life style, last October. He had tried every suggested diet from our doctor, American Diabetes Assoc., you name it. The goal was to simply get his diabetes under control and if possible get him off the meds. I know it may sound different than what you're used to hearing, but it has worked wonders.

    Here's why I mention it:

When you're traveling and need to find something to eat that accessible, think burgers with cheese and bacon w/out the bun. There's no worries about fat or calories. Cheese and bacon actually count for protein. Salads with chicken strips are great and a little ranch dressing is perfect. Many airports have Chili's restaurants in them now and they serve a good chicken strips plate. I'll cheat sometimes and get the corn on the cob side but it's a great meal in between flights. For breakfast you can always get eggs with bacon or sausage and it's all protein. I love peanuts and raw almonds for snacks. If you don't need to be so strict on carbs, peanut butter and celery is a great one in the afternoon. I finally found some yogurt that was ok, but again, it's recommended for diabetic diets. They both keep great in a little cooler.

We didn't have any problems on our last cruise in March adapting to the menus available. We would usually leave the rolls, not always, but most of the time. We HAD to enjoy desert!! Of course our waiters had a bit of fun with us when hubby would order a second steak (for the protein of course), or I would ask for the shrimp cocktail with the salad. I love cruises!!
And that's what is so wonderful about lifestyle eating and not 'diets' right?? Lifestyle understands that you have a 'life' and allows for all those wonderful exceptions.

Anyway, I know it long, but it's a topic close to home.

I have the same diet, low carb and higher protein than most people get (actually considered "adequate protein" by the doctors promoting the diet). This was in order to lower my triglycerides and rid myself of the other "metabolic syndrome" risk factors. Best diet I have ever been on, but then I like the foods I'm now eating, so that makes it easier.

We discovered the freshly made omelets on our last cruise, and the main dining room always had a choice that worked for me. I actually have more trouble eating on land than on sea!

My diet is a bit different. I'm supposed to stay away from fats and anything spicy. My doctor doesn't have a problem with my eating carbs. Hamburgers, for example, are an absolute no-no for me.

Do you pick the least worst from amoung all bad choices ... or what?

Hi Lulu, If you are not leaving country why don't you just carry some apples, bananas, oranges and some biscuits. Going thru customs you should investigate if letter from yr doctor will enable you to carry biscuits. Countries are different Jackie

    Good suggestions, Jackie.

A trip when leaving from home is not as much of a problem as the RETURN trip.
