Smile No Problem Cruising with Type II Diabetes

We recently returned from 20 days on Island Princess. This was my first cruise since being diagnosed with Type II Diabetes which is totally controlled by diet.

It was extremely easy to eat a healthy diet just from ordering off the regular menu. Also, no problem in the speciality restaurants either.

My blood sugar levels were great the entire time and I, crazy as it may seem since I'm not trying to lose weight, lost 3 pounds on the cruise.

If you are a Type II Diabetic and concerned about eating properly on a cruise, go and enjoy. You'll be fine with your food options.

WELCOME BACK!! That's great news LuLu! Can you still drink as many cocktails as you want, or do you have to cut back?

Glad to hear it went well for you. As someone with late onset diabetes on both sides of my family, I have to get tested every year. So it's a concern.

Oh, Gene, you would ask that!

ALL of my wasted carbs are totally used for beer and wine ... often overused!

Unfortunately, I can no longer drink vodka which makes my blood sugar soor! Miss my Bloody Mary's and Martinis.

It's not that bad. Wine is good!

That's good to hear. I don't want my LuLu to change TOO much...

    Lulu,

I'm so glad to hear you didn't have any problems managing your glucose levels or diet while aboard ship. Were they any particular stand-out meals that tasted great and you felt were healthy additions to a vacationing Type II Diabetes sufferer? Any meals, (other than Bloody Mary's!) that you tried to avoid?

    Welcome Home!

Martin .... Also, hope you never have to deal with the loss of vodka! Happily, I'm fine with wine ... and am learning to like beer if I drink it from a wine glass ....

One thing I've learned is each with Type II is different and what each can eat/drink without drastically raising the BSL can vary greatly.

Tim .... Basically, I eat a Heart Healty diet at home so there was nothing I avoided on the ship that I don't normally avoid at home.

The thing that became a frequent favorite was the Fruit Plate which contained four small wedges of cheese, grapes, raw walnuts, and assorted crackers. I'd eat ALL of the walnuts & grapes, a bite or so of each cheese, and the two whole grain crackers.

I only ordered the cheese plate because I especially liked it. There were lots of other things I could have ordered from the regular menu and been happy.

Hi Lulu, Thank you for your reply but my biggest problem is going ashore in foreign climes as P & O cruise lines recommends eat only processed foods and not water etc. Since I have been eating regularly fruit & raw vegitables and fresh food. At home (Australia) I carry an apple and biscuits with me but I cannot work out what I can obtain easily & quickly. Maybe in this case soft drink (not diet) would boost my sugar but this something I have not had in years and is solution to low sugar problem. Jackie

    Hi Jackie! Welcome to CLF!

For sure ... low blood sugar is just as much of a problem as high blood sugar.
