The other night, DH and I went to Bob Evans. No turkey and dressing for me!

The waiter came back 3 times, while I was figuring out the least harmful thing on the menu. Feels like everything takes research now.

Mum uses equal I prefer splenda but I agree alot of the artificial sweetners have a horrible after taste. I can use it in coffee without a problem but can't stand it in tea or soda. Sugar free jello seems to be fine.

There seems to be alot of better choices for take outs now. Was a time when everything was full of fat, salt and sugar. Now there's lots of options - Subway, Sumo Salad etc. There's a brilliant lunch bar in Perth which has an amazing salad bar were staff make you up a salad with ingredients of your choice including various lettuces, low fat meats and cheese and low fat dressings. It's completely guilt free and YUMMY.
does she like yogurts? they make some really good ones now and if you add granola or other chewy things to it, makes it seem more like you're eating something substantial and not just swallowing liquid. or eat crackers w/ it or some salad. or pcs of cut up fruit. anything to make you chew.

there are plenty of diabetic cook books out there now, so the variety is there. Your mother has to keep changing her diet or she will give up and get very discouraged. Soon it will be so easy for her but it takes time and lots of paitence to get the dos & don'ts down. it took me about 6 mos to get my sugar levels down to an "acceptable" level and yrs to get it down to hi normal. as for the food part, anything I buy, I automatically look at the sugar % for me & sodium % for DH, then price etc. ha. it's more depressing buying for him than me !!! as I said before. it will become normal in time, tell her to hang in there. if she likes salads, there is so much she can do to make them real good. and since I became diabetic they have come a long way in sugar free food and how they taste !! only thing I always wonder, is why if they take ingredients out, does it cost more ???

popcorn is good for snacking, low fat,of course. and for my cereals, besides bananas in it, I also buy fresh blueberries, wash them and then freeze them and put on my cereal, real good as they melt. or just put on fresh. or just eat as snack, so are grapes, not nutrional but fill you up. be careful of oranges and some other fruits, even though natural sugar, they aren't good for you in big qtys.

tell your mother, be patient, and she's lucky to have such a wonderful caring daughter. . am praying for her Debbie

why no turkey? no dressing or the gravy but plain turkey is fine as far as I know, with a salad, maybe a vegie. baked sweet potatoe instead of white is ok once or twice a week, tad of butter. know Bob Evans in FL has them. we don't have them here on LI.

you can ask for substitutions in rest. they're getting used to it now. and alot of times, it's easier & more savings for them to do it.

If know am going out to eat, will be real good & careful at the other meals during the day so can "splurge" when go out. do this for my diabetes & wt control.

It does take time & patience, and gets frustrating, I know. But you will look back in a few mos, and wonder why you were getting so upset cause it will all be so easy. did your dr send you to a nutritionist? that would help alot and the 1st couple of visits s/b covered by ins. it's a medical condition /reason for going. same for seeing an opthomologist(not a optometrist) and podiatrist, they s/b all be covered. you have to see them at least once a yr for check-ups and its due to a medical cond. unless your covered already for these. not trying to be pushy or know it all here. so hope you don't take offense.

Had to give up regular cheese (which was a staple for me). Just made some no fat muffins, so I'll have to see how they taste when they cool off. Also been eating whole wheat pasta, which does take getting used to.

The worst: giving up mint and chocolate.

Type 2 diabetes runs in the family: my father, my maternal grandfather. On my hubby's side: his father.

ooh, thats tough. and can be so harmful to your esophagus, stomach lining etc. your diet sounds really hard, think I'll take my diabetes. the whole wheat pasta is a very aquired taste, one I haven't conquered yet. I just eat very little pasta instead. My DH eats low fat muffins from stores and seems to like them, heard that if you put applesause in them instead of some other ingred. they are still moist & tasty. am not a big baker.
it used to be that type 2 skipped a generation, my paternal grandmother had it. but think that isn't the case anymore. My daughter is ok so far but I didn't get it till was in mid 40's.

let us know how the muffins were.

We all have our challenges, don't we?

Am going to Diabetes education next week. So far all my readings have been low, so I must be doing something right.

Last night, my BG was 87, so I had four bites of ice cream - heaven...

And it tastes just as good in small amounts!

I think Mum's got it pretty well under control. Her doctor is very pleased with her levels. She is very disciplined. It seemed that some foods are okay for some and not for others. Mum has found that grapes, stone fruits, citrus put her levels up. She is very careful the majority of the time so she is free to indulge, a little, sometimes. She's even started exercising on a treadmill. She does 10 minutes and I do 30. She's had two hip and two knee replacements so she's taking it slowly at first.

Interestingly every time Mum has gone into hospital her levels rise so high she has to go on insulin injections. Her doctor is convinced that stress makes her levels rise.

We're going out for dinner tonight so we'll have to work out what's best to order too. (Mum with her diabetes, me with my diet). Alot of restaurants here now have their menus on the internet which helps. I've found its more and more common for restaurant to be aware that their customers want to know what in their food.

Its not always easy though.

Well, so far, my numbers have been all lower - between 87 and 108.

does that mean I'm doing good?

The muffins are passable.

I tend to try to find online menus too. My hubby had a coupon for TGIFridays and wondered if I can eat there. I looked and it didn't look good. Everything was either fried, spicy or fatty. Or fish, which I don't eat. So we didn't go.

Some years ago, my mother had thyroid problems (maybe still does) and was put on a special diet. It would drive us crazy trying to figure out where we could go. But she has great will power, most of the time.

Sorry can't help you with that. In Australia the sugar levels are in single digits. Mum's levels should be no lower than 3 and no higher than 10. Mum's ideal is an average of 6.5 for the day. Hopefully someone else can be more helpful
