sidari, and I understand your point. I think it is commendable of anyone wanting to help expecially in this type of situation. The problem would come in with liability on the cruiselines end of it.

Only some ships have the sprinklers on the balconies now. It a new SOLAS regulation, but only the cruiselines themselves can Voluntarily decide to adopt them for older ships that have to be backfitted. It also depends on where the ship is registered and if that is a SOLAS country.

For Newbuilds, it depends on how far the construction was when the regulation went into effect as to whether they had to or not.

Sidari, I had hoped to have an answer earlier but it just came through.

I asked someone that would know. To make sure he was correct and no changes had taken place since he retired as Commodore from Princess a few years ago, he checked with his friends. Here is his response....

"According to my knowledge and the other colleagues who I ask no passenger can be allowed in any ship's operations.
The ship's fire team is very well trained, they carry-out a full drill every week and anyone of them have to go periodically ashore for fire training course . It is important to know very well as how the ship is constructed and the ship's procedures."

Somebeach....nice bit of Detective work there my friend..well done, i understand the comments made by the Ex commadore and i am sure that the people chosen to fight a ship fire (may they never happen) would do a really good job...but i take issue with his comments regarding ship construction!

Fighting a fire in a ship cabin is in reality no different than fighting a fire in a room full of combustible materials ! both can reach temperatures of over 1,000c and i would presume that the people chosen are trained in Hot fire training cabins made from Metal as well as Flashover training and taught to recognise the components of Combustion and possible Backdrafts as well as Water cooling techniques.

However it would be good to observe a drill carried out on ship to see how they are carried out.

No matter how much training anyone does it still does not susbstitute for the real thing beleive me when your ears are Burning you are either Too close or it is a very Hot fire.

Triptrop.. at least the fire Highlighted that there were materials being used that really shouldnt have been on such a ship!
