I'm sure they could have used your help and knowledge, but I doubt they would have let you take part if you're a passenger. The first rule is to protect passengers.

da Woods..i understand your reply but believe me Experience could have prevented the fire getting to what it was, lets face it how many of the Crew would have ever tackled any sort of fire prior to this one? and in a way i guess the passengers would have been protected....

I absolutely agree, but I'm just not sure they'd have let you do it. As I understand it from the original stories, there were some experienced emergency people on board who helped evacuate people from the area, but did not fight the fire.

Hi daWoods ...i guess it depends on what you term Emergancy people, they could have been police oficers or paramedics so you would not expect them to help fight a fire!

We have to hope that this occurence does not happen again on any ship in the future, maybe sprinklers are the way forward ..at least they would have supressed the fire and kept it in the one cabin.

Oh wow. Who would have the time and guts to film that from a few balconies away? Most people would made a beeline for the farthest part on the ship away from the fire! LOL

Adonis it depends on how you look at it? some people wil lsay they were very foolish, while others will say they did well to get the film of it, me i think in their position i would have done the same then got out of the cabin.

The fire clearly travelled sideways and upwards and depending upon the ferocity would only be a matter of time before it reached their cabin! who knows maybe it did?

There are sprinklers on the balconies now. I believe all ships must comply with this by a set time. Also the furniture on the balconies were changed when it became known they acted as fuel for the fire. Combined with the winds whilst the ship was moving, that fire spread fast.

Princess also has fire watchers on the bridge every night, not sure how other lines monitor balconies now. It's also requested that no towels or clothing articles are left on balconies and that folks do not throw cigs overboard.

Have to agree with others. Tho you would have wanted to help, you may have only been used to help get people away from the area. The firecrew on ships are very well trained, even if it isn't often they have to fight a fire of that size.

Somebeach... its good to hear that they have sprinklers now, i hear what you say about the training given to the crews of these ships but in reality in a confined space with a developing fire believe me there is no substitute for experience.
