CLF TIPS for Making your HOME SECURE While You Cruise
1.- NEVER give your full name, city of residence, and dates of your cruise publically. (Like here on CLF.)
2. - Make sure the emergency contact you gave the cruiseline knows you will be gone and how to contact you.
3. - Cancel your newspaper subscription and put a hold on your mail.
4.*- Have a trusted neighbor, friend or relative check on your home while you are gone.
5.- Put your lights on timers that go on/off at different times.
6. Ask a neighbor with 2 cars to park one in your driveway.
7. Unplug electrical devices such as toasters, microwaves, coffee makers, TVs, computers, etc. this helps to prevent fires and also lightening damage to the devices if the power line gets a hit.
8. Turn off water to your house. And if you don't have an auto-shut off switch for your gas line, consider getting one (it's a necessity in California).
9. Do NOT record a message on your answering machine announcing that you will be 'out of town' until x date... think about it.
10. Make sure that your bag tags from your luggage do not have your home address. Use a work address or better yet, only a cell phone number. If they are lost the airline or cruise line will contact you before sending the luggage.

11. Unplug your garage door opener (especially if it has an outdoor key pad) and lock it manually.
#10 I certainly did for our last two cruises. I used label stock to print labels for our luggage tags. The last cruise was just our name and my cell phone number as we were going straight to the port from home.
The trip before that was very complicated. So I made labels (with the destination and our cell number) for the first hotel, the train, the second hotel, the cruise, the first post-cruise hotel, the train back south, the final hotel. Before leaving for the next leg, I pasted the new labels over the old ones on the luggage tags and the card stock tags we were also using.
#11 is something hubby always does before we go anywhere overnight. And makes sure all the exterior doors are locked.
