Blood Donor Card - Do you take yours with you on cruises?

On a recent cruise there was an announcement for any with Type AB negative blood and would be willing to donate to please report to the medical center along with their Donor Card.

My DH has a Donor Card but doesn't carry it around with him at home ... much less on a cruise.

    Does anyone else?

Thumbs down This makes no sense

What is this, a blood drive on cruise ships? How ironic: last year, there was a thread on this message board about the Red Cross, which is concerned about diseases you can get outside the U.S. such as mad cow and malaria, not wanting blood from cruisers. I can't imagine the ARC can say that but want to get blood on your ship. You reopened an old can of worms, Lulu.

Stay tuned for my review of the Sapphire Princess northbound repositioner

You are again misunderstanding. I'm sure they needed the blood in the medical facility for someone in medical trouble.

I agree with Hanna. More than likely they were requesting someone with AB- because they had a situation and needed to give blood to someone in need.

Strange they would have asked for a donor card though. All you'd need to do is sign a statement giving them permission along with a release form. Really shouldn't need a donor card in an emergency situation unless the person giving the blood was unconscious.

But several States have the 'donor' listed on their driver's license, like they do in Virginia. It would have thought that would be acceptable.

I just wish everyone would be a donor - it would save alot of lives. Too many people that need kidneys and livers will die if they don't receive a donation. Even if just 10% of the population signed up, we wouldn't have anybody on a list needed a vital organ. And just think how many blind people could see again. Just makes no sense to me why everyone isn't a donor.

Sorry, didn't mean to get off the subject, but this is one of my pet peeves. I remember when my dad died when I was 11 and my mom telling me that they were able to use his eyes to give someone sight. Even at age 11, I thought that was such a wonderful gift.

It's too bad most people don't feel the need to give such a gift - what a waste and such a shame.

On our last cruise there was an announcement that there had been a medical emergency and a patient needed some blood. Hopefully someone with the right blood type went to the infirmary.

I imagine that an "official" document, such as the Donor Card, would be necessary to confirm the donor's blood type before transfusing anyone Death by transfusion would be a terrible thing and the cruise line would ultimately be liable for medical malpractice even though the medical staff are contract employees.

That's true about blood type - but on our driver's license, it doesn't provide blood type - just says we're a donor. Would make sense to put blood type on it, since as you said, most people probably don't know what theirs are.

We've been on lots of cruises, but this was the first time we'd ever heard a request for blood. Then, asking for the Blood Donor Card made me wonder who takes this with them on a cruise ....?

Blood typing (the basics A,B,AB,and O and + or -) is so easy to do that I would be surprised that the infirmary could not do it on the spot- if only to make sure that there isn't a mistake some place.

Since I posted about an hour ago, my nephew with AB- called so I ask him if he carried his Blood Donor Card around with him.

He said that he always does because the Red Cross calls him to donate when their supply is low. Seems AB- is very rare blood type. While rare with Caucasians, it is even more so with other ethnic groups. Probably, the best hope was to find it amoung the mostly Caucasian pax base. Also, the next port stop was a Caribbean inland where the supply of AB- would probably be very low.

He also mentioned that his Blood Donor Card has a complete record the dates of his donations. In a dire emergency his blood could be used without proper processing like it normally is because of his donation history of clean blood. He says that most with an unusual blood type are aware of the situation and know their blood can be needed at any time.

We were on Oasis OTS . The announcement was only made once. One of the bartenders told us that since another request wasn't announced, someone had responded. Also, that it had to have been for some sort of emergency for someone with a rare blood type because it was very unusual to have this sort of announced request.
