You can bet the cake is just a regular white or chocolate cake. The skill is all in the icing.

Probably a very creative baker as Tony noted. You can take a basic cake mix in the flavor you like. Either a cake pan that's in the shape of a boat (kind of an oval) or take a longish cake pan and a shorter one. Bake the cakes and then trim to shape the bottom layer in the shape of a ship. Frost it, then cut the smaller one so it's about two thirds the size of the larger one, and stick it on top of the frosting, leaving the front third or so of the bottom layer uncovered.

Have it on a bigger serving dish, decorate it and then add blue covered frosting to simulate the sea.

I'm not the creative, but I imagine there's probably some moms who have made something like this. You can try googling birthday party cakes and boat and see if you find any instructions.

My daughter made a birthday cake for her brother in the same way but in the shape of a bottle of champagne.

definitely lots of layers kept together with regular icing - then cut to shape the ship -- the main icing covering everything is called 'fondant'

we used to watch a show on the food channel called 'ace of cakes' -- they made all kinds of special cakes -- and fondant is used to cover their cakes -- sure miss that show

Yonnie, did not realize that you were an Ace of Cakes junkie! Very creative. And they talked about their failures along with their successes.

I think to bake a cake with ship shape. For example for my mother's birthday.
