I'm the one who picked the what are clam shells option. Because we have never been on a cruiseline's private island (which I'm guessing is where one would get a clam shell).

Patty, not just a private island thing ... lots of resort areas have clam shells for rent too.

Clam Shells are dome shaped (normally made of canvas). The top and three sides are completely enclosed (top to bottom) with the front is totally open and faces the beach. Two beach/lounge chairs fit in them.

We have never rented one on cruise ship private islands ... but have at beach resorts.

Even before my knees got bad -- we never rented a clam shell. I can't understand why they can't make a lounge chair that is high off the ground so that those of us with handicaps could use them.

When HAL first had the cabanas -- they were only 4 of them and they were offered to the PS and S Deluxe Suite Passengers first. We rented one for $50!! Now there are 15 of them and HAL charges -- I think -- $299.

Davy -- there is a difference between a clam shell and a cabana.

I'll see if I can round up some pictures.

Thanks, Yonnie! It would be great if you could post some since I don't know how.

We much prefer sitting in a shaded area or renting a beach umbrella to clam shells.

The air flow is mostly blocked and it can get rather hot and stuffy in the clam shells.

On the other hand .... on windy days when the sand is blowing everywhere, they are nice to have.
