Up until this last Feb. I had 3 weeks. On Feb 8 when my Dad had to lay off the 2 non family employees, I declared I get 4 weeks. I need that extra week of rest from all the stress around here. Maybe I should have bumped it up to 5 weeks? hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
I work per diem as a visiting Nurse so we get no vacation time. We can schedule as much as we want but we do not get paid for it.
I am twice retired and Ruth is disabled so we do cruise a lot.
Most was 7 cruises in one year. Average is 3-4 cruises per year.
She gets more cruises if I can keep her out of St Thomas and away from the jewlery stores.....

Kyle, my hubby has a spineless union negotiating his contract. They get plenty of vacation time (compared to anything I ever got) but people in the same position at the Dept. of Water and Power-LA make several thousand dollars more than for The City of LA, even though they're drawn from the same personnel pool of applicants and have the same requirements. Every year the pay desparity gets worse.

At my last job, we were able to roll over any unused vacation days but we would earn them at the rate of 1 day every five weeks. We also got very few holidays off. And if certain holidays (Christmas, etc.) fell on a day you wouldn't work anyway (Sundays for all of us, Saturdays for the accountant, service staff, and me), you wouldn't get a replacement holiday day off. I was able to take off several days for my honeymoon and then again as part of my maternity leave.

When I worked in PR, there was some policy that someone should be working on those "little" holidays such as the day after Thanksgiving, Dec. 31st, etc. Just in case a client wanted some help. Of course, the clients all took those days off. The only one who would call is the guy who started the company (he was in Chicago). One year, I had to explain the switchboard to the Account Exec who volunteered to work the last day of the year (she wanted to catch up when it was quiet; also she didn't have much of a life outside of the office) so she can answer when old man Edelman called in.
At that job and some others, the corporate office will try to work their employees as much time as they can. One advantage to working in a big office building is that they often are closed up on Presidents Day, etc. Any company that wants to be open on those days would have to pay for security costs.

I get 5 weeks a year of PTO (Paid time off) - plus one day I guess. I was getting 4 weeks vacation and 6 days of sick time until they combined them. I have about 7 weeks stored up but I am working really hard to start using my saved time.

Alisa, that's great that you got an increase in your vacation days! I know only having two weeks was hard for you and it will really help out with that Med cruise, I bet.
I'm ridiculously lucky as I don't have any set amount of vacation. I just tell my boss when I need to take off and so far, he's never said no and I do get paid for the days I take off. My guess is it averages between 4 and 6 weeks a year. Plus we take off just about every holiday you can imagine. Arbor Day is Monday? Okay, I'll see you on Tuesday then.
Southpaw - Arbor Day? what the heck?!?!?!??! you're lucky! its so great that your jobs are flexible enough to allow you that time off!
and yes, I was so glad to get that extra vacation time. that now means that my Med cruise next year won't be my only vacation of the year. I just need to use my vacation wisely and I can probably plan a 3-4 day mini trip somewhere... land based... I was thinking Banff... we'll see.
Ruth - yes! you definitely need to start using that vacation time!!!!
