Well, LuLu....it depends on the port.....if there is a particular area we want to visit.
Sometimes we will have a backup in mind if something goes wrong with our original plan, but not always. Sometimes we just play it by ear.
If nothing else, I am always happy to sit in a bar/restaurant by the port and people watch. Especially in ports like Cozumel where the people returning to the ship are in pretty high spirits. I usually don't stress too much about it. I'll be back!
It may be to just goof-off in town ... but it's a plan!

We rarely have a plan A on the cruises we have been on so far. I think it is beasue we tend to wing everything ,book cruises at the last minute. our last two cruises wer booked less than two weeks before sailing.
I think on a cruise to the Med it would be different though.

It depends on the itinerary and ports. In the Caribbean, we tend to have a Plan A and B for new ports. Ports we've been to before we don't worry about the Plan B quite as much.
In the Med, Europe, Alaska, or Hawaii I would have a Plan A, B, C and possibly D since it's a long flight for us to those destinations. I sure wouldn't want to just stay on the ship when I don't know if or when I'll be back that way.
Big Red Boat 11/1994 (Bahamas); HAL Rotterdam 9/1996(Alaska); Carnival Sensation 5/2000 (W. Carib); Carnival Tropicale 8/2000 (W. Carib); Carnival Destiny 6/2002 (S. Carib); Carnival Miracle 5/2004 (E. Carib); Carnival Legend 1/2005 (Exotic W. Carib); Louis Emerald 3/2005 (Greek Isles); RCI Explorer of the Seas (Bermuda) 9/2008; RCI Brilliance of the Seas (MED) 11/2008; RCI Adventure of the Seas (Southern Caribbean) 9/2009
Plan B (when we do have a plan A) is to hang around the dock and either hire a local tour guide or a taxi to take us around. Come to think of it, two of our favorite shore excursions were a result of this approach.....

I tend to be a compulsive planner, even though I'll leave room for any change of plans. We had a shore excursion cancelled in Grand Cayman due to rain so I got out my guide book and we toured a couple of museums, including one, a Maritime one, that we really enjoyed.
Most of the time, we just wing it anyway, instead of going on excursions. I'll note down some interesting sights to see and we'll walk around and find them. A couple of times we've negotiated a city tour with a taxi driver. These can be interesting ways of seeing the city when you get a native who will take you to unusual sights. Our Jamaican driver was showing us some fauna, stopping the taxi so we can touch and smell the plants. And then he showed us where the locals live, up away from the port. You probably wouldn't see that on a regular scheduled tour.
