    Cruise Tipping versus Hotel Tipping

We've spent alot of time discussing the subject of providing gratuities for your stateroom attendant during a cruise. But I'm curious as to how many of you provide a gratuity for your house-keeper when you stay in a hotel room.

Yes, a stateroom attendant is more readily available and cleans your cabin twice a day, but for the most part, the average-size cabin on a ship is about half the size of a standard hotel room. So a hotel house-keeper has more to do while providing the same type of service.

So, do you provide gratuities to both? Only one? If so, how much?

We do both, we cruise once a year but also do long weekends at hotels throughout the year. On a ship we do the auto tipping and give extra as well. At hotels our tip is $5 a day, $10 if we take the kids. I am a neat nik so not much to do in either.
Some people try to turn back their odometers. Not me! I want people to know why I look this way. I've traveled a long way, and some of the roads weren't paved.

We never really tip our hotel room cleaner. We usually only stay in a hotel one or max two nights in a row so never really felt the need to do so.
If we stayed longer and had some contact with the room steward the matter would be completly different. Then we would pay a tip.
If we stay a place longer then 2 nights we usually rent an apartment.

Onboard a ship we do the pre-paid tip and give some extra also.

We only tip hotel staff if we stay more than 1 night. The room is ready for us when we get there and they make it up the next morning for the next guest. Nothing to tip for, in my opinion.

We usually don't tip at a hotel as we are only there 1 night. We have several timeshares & some of them come to clean every day. I always tip them.

Naturally we always leave extra tips on the cruise to those who have served us well.

But hotels -- sometimes -- depends on how long our stay is there AND if we have the same people cleaning our room each day.

That's a really big factor in hotels with me too.

We usually tip IF the room was clean when we arrived, and if we stay extra days, if the room is kept clean!

Generally $5 a day, more/less, depending on various factors, including how moody I am.

I traveled around our 5 state area, mostly in rural areas for 20 years with my job. I often spent 4 nights in a motel as we went out Mon and home Fri. I never thought of tipping while at that job. I haven't tipped in any motel stays while on vacation either.
