As we live in Montreal and thre are no cruises to the Caribbean we fly in the day before. Too many horror storeis of people missing their cruise because their flight was delayed or canceled. Plus gives a chance to relax a little before starting our cruise.
For west coast sailing, we usually drive or fly in the day of sailing. For the east coast we go down a day early.

I have done both, the day of and day before. In 2005 DH and I went the day of as I didn't think of a day early as it was Nov and didn't think we would be having any snow storms here yet. However there was a delay in Atlanta because of thunder storms so missed our connection and got a later one. We were walking down the hall to our cabin as they were announcing the muster drill in 15 min.
I usually go a day early during our MN winters and we have booked an overnight on all our overseas cruises. I don't want to miss the ship or even cut it close!

Since we live in Florida, we go a day early to Port Everglades and Miami. Too old and lazy to get up at 0400 for the 5 1/2 hour drive.
We drive the day of to Tampa and Port Canaveral.
If we fly, it's always a day or two early.

We always fly in the day before for peace of mind. I would hate the stress of flying to the port the same day as the cruise departs.
Also, we like to embark as early as possible, usually around 11am, so thats another reason to fly in earlier.
From where we live now it is almost impossible to fly in the same day as a cruise departs due to flight conections etc.
