We're flying in the day before (very early) as we are flying out of the northeast in January and I want to make sure we can get there if the weather is bad/storming! I don't want to be one of those just after folks!
Naturally, it depends! Normally, NOW, we want to actually be there the day before!

11/21/09 Crown Princess 2/18/10 Island Pricess B2B Ft.Lauderdale to Acapulco and back (total 20 days)
OVER 40 (started young) Princess, Celebrity, RCCL, HAL, NCL, Costa, Disney, Carnival, Sitmar (Princess bought), and (a very long time ago) SS Bahama Star
Domestically, the day before, unless it's out of San Francisco!
Abroad, if there's going to be jet lag, I like to get there at least three days ahead, so that I'm more "human" when the cruise starts, and so that we get a little land time in that country...a week is ideal.

We live about 50 miles from the Port of LA so we'll drive in the day of for those cruises (with my hubby trying to get the car all packed up by 9am!!!! ).
We got to Seattle for our Alaskan cruise just before midnight Friday for our Sunday cruise. (we took the train up)
The two Caribbean cruises out of Miami, we flew in the day before. In fact, Carnival had given us a red-eye flight that would get us in early the day of, and we made them change it to a flight that would get us in the night before.

I agree with Andrew. Pre-cruise sight seeing, meeting old friends for the first time, etc...
