We always book our cruise at least 1 year in advance thus giving me plenty of time to research and decide what is best and not so good. I always try to book all of our excursions independently for several reasons. It's usually smaller groups, sometimes a little cheaper, more personal, and more in depth.

The down side could be, you might have to find your own way to and from, you need to make sure you will be back to the ship on time, and you need to make sure it is ligit!
Always do your research and get others advice.
We have never regretted booking on our own!

I voted for book thru the ship, even though we book some independently. At our advancing age it's much easier and safer for us to let the cruiseline handle it. We don't do as many excursions now either, since we have visited many places more than once (or twice, or three times, or.. )

We booked thru the ship, I'm not brave enough to book on my own always afraid I miss the ship. I always try to sick to morning excursions then I can be back on board in the afternoon for spa appointments or go to the pool.

I prefer to book direct because I feel there is more value to it. You can't beat paying the same price (or less) and having just the two of us on an adventure. But I have booked with the cruiseline too. I guess it all depends.

It depends. We did both on our last cruise and liked all of the shore excursions.

We generally go with the ship sponsored tours when there is any issue of getting back to the ship on time for departure.

We used to book through the ship, but recently we have taken a cab from whitchever port we are at and he drives us around the island. We find the excursions to be too pricey.

I usually book thru the cruiseline on -linr before we leave. That way we know that have the tour we want. Most of our cruises have to parts unknown to us.
