Sometimes think it's hard for those of us who NEVER get Sea Sick to relate to those who do.
Have always wondered ... (PLEASE ... in no way being ugly here) WHY folks who know they get Sea Sick continue to cruise?
As a queen of motion sick (I used to get motion sick driving myself down the street), I think I can help.
On the large ships, most people including those who get motion sick, will not get sick unless the seas are rough. On our very 1st cruise celebrating an anniversary, I was sicker than a dog. The storm was huge and by 10:30 everyone was in their rooms.
So for most, the chance is not very high. If you had only a 10% or less chance of being in a car accident, it probably wouldn't stop you from driving.
I take dramamine LESS DROWSY, it really is better than the regular dramamine. I take it before the flight and continue to take 1 in the morning and 1 in the late afternoon. I take it everyday, even on port days to keep it in my system.
I also use an electronic wristband that sends pulses up one of the fingers to tell you it is placed correctly. The problem with the regular wristbands is that if it is not on perfectly, it will not be effective. I use this when the ship starts to rock and I can feel the motion.
Now the best tip that I can give, go in the pool. We had a beautiful day, but due to the current it was very rocky. In fact, the pool was a wave pool. Your body doesn't really feel the motion in the water. Think about being in the water in the ocean with waves, not on top, but in the water.
Lastly, someone wrote about drawing a stick figure and then drawing a light bulb around it. I guess staring at it tricks the brain with the curves and the straight lines.
As sick as I can get, on the last 2 cruises, I only felt the rocking.
I can get motion sickness by being in a moving vehicle (like a car) and trying to read. Just can't do it. When we took the train up the west coast to get up to Seattle for our Alaskan cruise, I couldn't read or do any word puzzles without feeling nauseous. Drove me crazy. I was totally fine on the cruise.

Well... it can change I think. On my first cruise I wore a patch and still I was very sick.. even missed a few excursions just to lay down. But I never did much traveling then. After a few years of flying I realized that the motion didn't get to me anymore.. and on my next cruise I was fine. I still wore a patch, but didn't need it. And now I'mgoing on a 3rd cruise with no worries. I'll still get the patch in case, but I think if you can get the mind over matter part down it helps. Not always but sometimes. If I was sick like the first time on every cruise??? I would not continue. But it did pass.

I have the same problem.. no problems anymore on cruises or flights.. but I can't read or look at maps in the car or I get car sick.
On my first cruise I was very concerned with sea sickness, I took 2 different dramamines, and the wrist bands, (I get car sick). I took at dramamine before boarding the ship. and never again.
My second cruise took all the necessities, and only started feeling bad, at the end of the second sea day... Needed land under my feet I guess. and then never felt bad again... (I am gonna order the motioneaze this time though.. Thanks for the info)
ALSO: I was told to get a cabin on the lower levels and in middle of ship if you are prone to motion sickness. This is a good idea... and we try to stay in middle of ship because of this.

It's never been a serious problem. Maybe a little queasy for the first day or so if the seas are rough. If it gets too bad, dramamine does the trick. I find the key is to stay outside with a horizon until I get my sea legs. A bigger problem is stopping weaving when we get off the ship.
