Pretty much, yes. It's VOLUME, not actual weight of displacement.
SO, ti deternine if a ship would be crowded (at capacity) one would have to compare gt to # of passengers...

I think maybe service and maintenance area are excluded from the gross tonnage measuer, but I'm not certain about that.

Celebrity's claim to fame (or one of them) is that the space/pax ratio is larger. That is more space per pax, or conversely few pax per space!.

So, a 90,000T Millenium class ship has about 1800 pax, Whereas a similar size ship on another line has 2200 pax. (My figures may not be accurate, but this is the idea). Thus a less crowded atmosphere. As far as the actual tonnage, I always thought it was the weight of the vessel????

Nope - Gross Registered Tonnage is VOLUME of ENCLOSED SPACE.
Basically, they are measuring AIR.

NET TONNAGE is a measurement (again, by volume) of the Cargo capacity of a ship.

LIGHT WEIGHT TONNAGE actually has to do with weight.
THIS one is how much the ship itself weighs - the shell, or hull, plue "machinery and fittings."

Let me ask another dumb question - everybody that said they loved the 90,000 size ships...may I ask WHY...I mean, iis there another advantage to those ships that size? I mean...does bigger ship size also mean more things to do...more space...or maybe is it just that it's really cool to be on a ship THAT big? (I never have experienced it!!)

I am trying really hard to reason out why anybody would ever need to know that... versus just plain cargo capacity. All I can figure is some sailors from the old days who came up with these measurements must have had a lot of time on their hands!

LOL - THL
They were actually selecting a medium sized ship. The large ones these days are around over 130,000gt.
The behemouths with the ice skating rinks, etc are just about 140,000. ANd RCL's newest (and biggest) is 160,000 gt.

I have cruised on one of the Voyager Class (138,000gt, ~ 3100 pax) ships, and it seemed to me more crowded than the Radiance (90,000gt, ~ 2500 pax.)

I think the reason people like the big ones is because they have so many amusements on them... slong with that danged Royal Promenade, with it's mardi-gras type parades, shops, and shopping mall atmosphere

It doesn't appeal to me, but some folks really love it!

First, about the tonnage. I never knew it was the measurement of AIR. Live and learn!

About the 90,000 t ships. They have a feeling of open space. And there is room for everything. On the Zenith, certain areas had to double up for activities. Even on the Galaxy, duplicate bridge was in the same room as some verbal (and disturbing) game.

Also, there are more outdoor areas where you can go for peace and quiet.

Also, the spa area is larger and there is a spa restaurant.

Also, the gym is more spacious.

Also, there is a specialty restaurant.

And much more!

I guess you should try it once. I would like to try your smaller ships!
