Well, we have taken just one 10-day cruise, and I did love it. If I had my druthers, we'd do more of these.
But, Hubby starts to get antsy along about day five.
So, in reality, we tend to book a mix of short ones (3-4 nighter) to satisfy him and week-long ones.
Hubby has only had a 7 night cruise so I don't know what he would think of longer or shorter. I think it would depend on where we were cruising out of. If you were spending a lot of money to fly to the location first he would like it to be longer.
Another thing to think about too is how much time off would you have. If there wasn't enough vaction leave to have time before and after to relax he would probable prefer a shorter one too.

Well, on the short ones, we are usually on the Sovereign, and I take no time off before or after. In fact, am often back at work by 10 am on disembarkation day.
Also, don't have to fly to the port - just call up brother and ask him to drop us off at the ship, and pick us up at the end. No parking charges that way.

That would make cruising more affordable. I want to take a New England cruise since I live here.
When we did Alaska we were living in Tacoma and sailed out of Seattle.
When I took Suzanne on the Star Princess we left from Vancouver B.C. and arrived in Seattle so we took the shuttle (cheap) to Vancouver and the Mom of the friend of Suzanne's I took picked us up in Seattle. It was an overnight cruise we had a balcony suite for $60 per person. It was a good way to introduce cruising to the girls and see how they would do.

I book as many days as I can get! Our first cruise ever was a 7 day out of Ft Lauderdale. Then we did a 7 day to Alaska. After that, the shortest have been 11 days. The longest, 14. I like a 14 day cruise, but can't always find one.
Since we have to always fly to a port of embarkation, we always book back-to-back cruises like 7 days to give us 14 days, 10 days ones to give us 20 days.
We have done several 13, 14, 16, 21 and 22 day cruises.

We book months in advance so that we always hyave the same cabin. Thus no packing and unpacking.
In Ft Lauderdale we do have to go through immigration in the cruise teminal. On HAL, they have changed the procedure a couple of years ago. "Intransit" passengers a recalled last. Once you have gone through immigration you can either go back on the ship or go out on your own and return to the ship anytime before lifeboat drill.
In San Diego and Seward we have never had to go through immigration.
Each port has their own rules.
